A mailbomb is sometimes used in an attempt to retaliate against someone who persistently violates netiquette (a term based on a blend of the words network and etiquette, referring to a set of rules governing polite ways of behaving when using e-mails or the Internet).
Mailbombing is such an acknowledged problem in cyberspace that various related compounds can be sourced on the Internet; for instance many citations can be found for the concept of mailbomb protection, and there are several web sites dedicated to the promotion of mailbomb early warning systems.
Mailbomb can function as a superordinate term for specific kinds of e-mail bombardment, eg: a hyponym is list-bomb: to mailbomb someone by forging messages which subscribe them to a large amount of computer-controlled mailing lists.

 AOL Mailbomb
What I have done at this point since I still have not gotten any meaningful response from AOL, is to let the mail through to one of our servers from AOL.
This server is basically running full-tilt throwing the mailbomb which consists of thousands of e-mails to bogus addresses, away; and delivering the occasional bit of legitimate mail that does come in.
Because it's 100% maxed out, incoming mail from AOL won't be processed in anything resembling real-time but at least it will be processed, and the other servers will handle mail from the rest of the net normally.

In the Mailbomb Threshold fields, select the message number and time interval to be used.
If you want to prevent future mailbombs from the mailbomb sender, identify the sender's IP address (by looking at the Internet Agent's console), then modify the appropriate class of service to prevent mail being received from that IP address.

The Mailbomb perl program accepted as parameters the e-mail addresses of victims as well as the number of e-mail messages to send.
Although the Mailbomb exploit was used several times throughout the simulation with different parameters, a typical attack would send 10,000 one kilobyte messages (10 megabytes of total data) to a single user.
