It is believed that The Sultan built his palace in Maimbung after the town of Jolo (Tiangge, or Walled city) was taken over by the Spaniards in the late 1800s when the Spaniards built a fort there in the Walled City of Jolo.
Maimbung is on the island of Jolo but not in the city of Jolo.
In 1889, Maimbung, Jamalul Kiram's Sultan's Palace residence was burned and the deposed sultan Jamalul Kiram and Hadji Butu had to flee to the mountains of Talipao.
