Patrick Cleburne's Report of the Chattanooga-Ringgold Campaign (Missionary Ridge)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
From the east side of the main ridge there projected two spurs, one, on the north boundary, with its precipitous north side washed by the Chickamauga; the other, jutting out just north of the tunnel, did not run directly back, but northeasterly for 1,000 yards, forming an acute angle with the parent ridge.
Instead of placing Govan's brigade on the main ridge, I placed him on that spur in rear of it which jutted out just north of the tunnel and covered the valley and road before described, which led over the main ridge from the direction of the enemy.
Opposite the town the ridge is intersected by a narrow gap, which admits the railroad, a wagon road, and a good sized creek, a tributary of the Chickamauga.

The valleys and ridges were reversed; the stream courses became the main ridges, the main ridges became stream courses.
But the main ridges of the watershed regions of the two creeks have now joined up with other main ridges, which surround other creeks and streams and provide the boundaries for their separate watershed regions.
This main ridge without the branch between the creeks is thus the boundary of a larger region--a twin region--which includes the two single unit-regions of the two creeks.

It was used for defence in the middle ages, and archaeologists are divided as to whether it was built for this purpose by the Rornans, or before their arrival.

 Quinag
Quinag is the most northerly mountain in Assynt and possesses three main ridges laid out in a giant Y. The southern ridge over Spidean Coinich dominates the horizon as you drive north along the shores of Loch Assynt.
An obvious route follows the edge of the south ridge (it starts by heading west before turning northerly); the odd outcrop seen in silhouette at the top of the ridge is a knoll about 700m short of the first main top.
The final northern ridge (one we have not explored) also runs from the intermediate top, passing over an unusual 'truncated' top which can also be bypassed, to end at Sail Gorm.
