Mainamati (Bangla: ময়নামতি) is located almost 8 miles from the town of Comilla, Bangladesh.
The center piece of Buddhist sites at Mainamati is the Salban Vihara, almost in the middle of the Mainamati-Lalmai hill range.
It is clearly a Vihara, or an educational center with reasidential facilities.

Mainamati, an archaeological wealth, some eight kilometres from Comilla and about mid-way between Dhaka and Chittagong is the most famous centre of Samatat, and is named after one of the queens of a ruler.
The Mainamati-Lalmai hill range extends through the centre of the district of Comilla, and is dotted with 50 ancient Buddhist settlements.
Subsequently, 50 ancient sites of historical importance were discovered in and around Mainamati out of which 20 have been declared under protection.

Even though it is not included in the World Heritage list, Mainamati is an area with several important Buddhist acheological sites in Bangladesh.
The main congestion was in the outskirts of Dhaka, where seemingly a zillion trucks and buses gather and mingle.
There are several sites in Mainamati, many of them fall inside the Comilla cantonment or are unexcavated.

A similar complex, in fragments, has been laid bare on the site, known as Salban Vihara, on the Mainamati hills, the complex that can be identified as the Vihara of Bhavadeva, fourth ruler of the Buddhist Deva dynasty of Eaxt Bengal.
The remains of the temple in the centre of the monastic quadrangle may be seen to repeat the above plan of the second terrace of the Paharpur temple.

The Department of Archaeology assistant director, Md Khalequzzaman, told New Age they had engaged people in maintaining the sites, but most sites such as temples and mosques are still used by the local residents.
He said they have marked 50 archaeological sites, including the Mainamati monastery, for excavation, but only eight have so far been excavated partially.
He said lack of funds, manpower and lack of awareness among the public of archaeological values were some major problems they face.

According to the Regional Director of Archaeology Department, this newly discovered structure of the brick-built Buddhist temple is at least 1,200 years old.
The Archaeology Department also confirmed that this newly founded temple has similar features to the Godaibari Dhap temple found earlier at Mahasthangarh and the Itakhola Mura temple found at Mainamati in Comilla.
A good number of antiques including ornamental and polished bricks, clay ornaments and toys, terracotta pieces and cast coins of the Gupta and Paul periods were also found at the site.
