In the News (Thu 16 Feb 12)

  History of Fashion Designer Mainbocher
Mainbocher wanted to keep his designs very exclusive and therefore invited only a select few people to attend his collections, and made them pay a large admission fee.
Mainbocher worked by making sketches, using fabrics that he had chosen, and imagining the role a particular design might play in a client's life.
Mainbocher retired in 1971 and moved to Europe, until he died in 1976.

In early 1950, several designers -- Mainbocher, Phillip Mangone, Hattie Carnegie, and Milgrim -- were approached for their ideas on the design or redesign of various female Marine uniforms.
Mainbocher, having had previous experience with WAVE uniforms, was eventually chosen for the project.
He offered to design a complete set of uniforms for female Marines since he viewed their wardrobe as a "hodge-podge." He could not afford to have his name associated with a "patchwork" job and accomplished the designs, sample uniforms, and master patterns for the token sum of $1.00.

 Essays - Clients and Craftswomen
Both Molyneux and Mainbocher specialized in a kind of slim, fitted apparel that perhaps seemed simple when compared to the extravagances of the 1920s, but was wholly satisfying in its beautiful tailoring and quiet elegance.
With the coming of age of the anti-ornamental purist element in art after Le Corbusier's breakthroughs in the late 1920s and the growth in philosophical importance of Germany's Bauhaus school, fashion's own "return to order" was the "classic" clothing of the 1930s.
Mainbocher, an American from St. Louis who combined his first and last names once in Paris, was beloved for his pure, uncomplicated, simply cut designs -what Harper's Bazaar called his "deceptive plainness" -that clients viewed as investments for the long haul.(

1930's-50's Vintage Clothing: #1709 Mainbocher evening gown at Vintage Textile
In 1930 Mainbocher became the first American to open a couture house in Paris, where he had a great success because of his creative designs and his close association with international high society.
There are a few minor flaws which do not spoil the appearance of the gown: slight soiling along the hemline; slight abrasion of the satin along the inside upper edge of the bodice; and a small mend on the under side of one bodice flap.
Given Mainbocher's standing in the pantheon of American design, this gown would be much more expensive in pristine condition.

The museum has a lot of the duke and duchess's raiments on display, including her famous slim wedding gown designed by Mainbocher.
(According to Diana Vreeland, Mainbocher was responsible for the duchess's "wonderful simplicity and dash.") The gown's original blue has since faded to white, but don't be fooled—it really was blue; no one in the 1930s would have dreamed of wearing white when marrying for the third time.
