Cat Fanciers: Maine Coon: Cat Breed FAQ
Maine Coons were well established more than a century ago as a hardy, handsome breed of domestic cat, well equipped to survive the hostile New England winters.
Interestingly, the breed closest to the Maine Coon is the Norwegian Forest Cat which, although geographically distant, evolved in much the same climate, and lends credence to the theory that some of the cats responsible for developing the Maine Coon were brought over by the Vikings.
Maine Coons develop slowly, and don't achieve their full size until they are three to five years old.

Maine Coon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Maine Coons have medium-long, dense fur, with longer hair, or a ruff, on their chests similar to the mane of a lion (which is why the breed is sometimes humorously called the "Mane Coon").
Maine Coons are noted for their ability to trill their meows, which sounds like a combination of a purr and a meow, and they tend to make this sound when happy or startled.
Maine Coons are usually not "lap" cats, and many Maine Coons, possibly because of their size, are not comfortable with sitting on a person's lap or chest, though this may depend on the personality of the individual cat.

The Maine Coon was originally the American wild cat, living mainly on farms where it was held in high esteem by farmers for its ability to catch vermin.
Although it is fairly new to the British show bench, the Maine Coon has actually been shown in America since the 1860's, initially by local farmers at their own annual cat show at the Skowhegan Fair, and Maine Coons from all over the territory competed for the coverted title of "Maine State Champion Cat".
