  Hannibal Hamlin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hamlin served in the Maine Legislature, the U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S. Senate and as Governor of Maine.
Hamlin was born in the Paris Hill district of South Paris, Maine, in Oxford County.
He died in Bangor, Maine, on July 4, 1891 and is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery.

The Maine Legislature is the state legislature of the U.S. state of Maine.
It is a bicameral body composed of the Maine House of Representatives and the Maine Senate.
The Legislature also has the power to propose constitutional amendments by a vote of two-thirds in each house; the proposal must be approved by a majority of voters in a referendum in order to be passed.

The new law was a response to a 1980 decision by Maine Attorney General Joseph Brennan (himself a graduate of a private school) that tuition payments to religious schools were in violation of the Establishment Clause of the U.S. Constitution.
On November 26, 2002, the Maine Principals' Association, the organization that regulates high school interscholastic extracurricular activities, sent a memorandum to private schools stating that they would be ineligible to compete with other teams if they allowed homeschooled students to play on their teams.
The Maine State Board of Education in May 2004 began the process of repealing Chapter 130 of the state code to eliminate “obsolete” home-school regulations including the requirement that parents seek “approval” from the state to homeschool.

Maine's move toward universal coverage is unusual in a year when most states are simply trying to maintain the coverage they have, said Donna Folkemer of the National Conference of State Legislatures.
Maine also has a program called Maine Rx to use its buying power to force drug companies to offer bulk discounts on prescription drugs for the elderly, the working poor and others who have trouble paying for their medicine.

The state of Maine's pivotal role in the founding of Bates College 150 years ago made Monday afternoon's Statehouse celebration, featuring a "Bates College Day" proclamation by Maine Gov. John Baldacci and a legislative joint resolution sponsored by State Sen. Peggy Rotundo, D-Androscoggin, a proud event for both college and state.
With 37 legislators joining Rotundo as co-sponsors of the joint resolution, the Maine Legislature, with its vote on April 28, honored the public-spirited efforts to found the College in 1855.
Those efforts were led by Cheney, a former member of the Maine Legislature, who, in the words of today's resolution, "saw a great, unmet need in the State: to broaden the educational opportunities for young men and women through the founding of a new institution of higher learning...."

Apr 11, 2006 2:47 PM The Maine House of Representatives and Senate have approved a bill that would require manufacturers to establish the infrastructure necessary to collect and recycle unwanted thermostats, according to an Associated Press report.
In January, Maine banned the sale of new mercury-based thermostats.
It is hoped this new law, in conjunction with state-offered financial incentives, will prevent the estimated 5,600 pounds of mercury in use in current thermostats from winding up in landfills.
