She was re-elected to the House in 1974, and, in 1976, won election to the Maine Senate, representing Androscoggin County.
Snowe was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1978, and represented Maine's 2nd Congressional District from 1979-1994.
On May 23, 2005, Snowe was one of fourteen moderate senators, known as the Gang of 14, to forge a compromise on the Democrats' use of the filibuster on judicial nominees.

By an 18-17 party-line vote, senators adopted an amendment to increase the base pay from the current $6.25 per hour to $6.50 per hour in two phases, rather than to $7 as the original bill proposed.
The original bill sought to increase Maine's minimum wage to $6.65 in October 2004 and then to $7 on Oct. 1, 2005.
As amended in the Senate, it would instead increase the wage by 10 cents an hour in October and another 15 cents, to $6.50 an hour, in October 2005.
