Mainflingen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mainflingen is a small town of about 3800 inhabitants, part of the municipality Mainhausen (near Frankfurt am Main) in Hessen, Germany.
The reason that it is rather well-known is that it is the site of the DCF77 radio station which broadcasts the official standard time as given by the atomic clocks of the PTB Braunschweig.
A second facility, called "Mainflingen C" is used for transmitting the programme of the "Evangeliumsrundfunk" (until January 1st, 1995 the programme of "Deutschlandfunk") on the medium wave frequency 1539 kHz.

Due to their low frequency, the electromagnetic field of the long waves penetrates deep into the ground, in contrast to mobile radio, and thus offers good reception characteristics even for receivers installed in basements.
Two of the long-wave transmitters operated by Deutschen Telekom, at the Mainflingen location near Frankfurt (Main) and at the Burg location near Magdeburg, guarantee the transmission of data throughout all of Germany and in extended areas of the neighboring countries.
The transmitters operate with a carrier frequency of 129.1 kHz in Mainflingen and 139.0 kHz in Burg.

As a third letter, the letter F was determined for the long-wave transmitters on the premises of the transmitting radio station Mainflingen (due to the vicinity to Frankfurt).
As the transmitting radio station Mainflingen uses several frequencies in the long-wave region, the numbers 77 corresponding to the carrier frequency 77.5 kHz were added to the three letters DCF to distinguish between the different transmitters of that station.
At present, the DCF77 call sign is still transmitted in Morse signals three times an hour, each time twice in succession, in minutes 19, 39, 59 (during seconds 20 to 32).
