The freight railroad is the high-speed, long-distance transportation artery on the land.
A number of mainline freight railroad routes suffer from serious capacity constraints, and a more aggressive approach to double-tracking is required.
Most senior executives in the freight railroad industry comprehend this fact, and they are endeavoring to come up with solutions that improve the capacity and efficiency of the freight intermodal system while also providing public benefits.

 TRB Annual Meeting Program
Track class-specific derailment rates for Class I mainline freight trains show two orders of magnitude difference between the lowest and highest FRA track classes.
Depending on the risk analysis question being addressed, accounting for these differences in rates will often be important in developing an accurate estimate of risk over the length of a route or at particular locations along a route.
A sensitivity analysis suggests that the distribution of freight train-miles by FRA track class may have changed since a study conducted by the Association of American Railroads (AAR) in the early 1990s.

When Trainload Freight was split, the Class 31 locomotives were allocated to Mainline and Transrail, and further locomotives were gradually withdrawn for a number of reasons.
But most important was that EWS was able to improve performance for their freight trains - the 66s achieved reliability figures never seen before in the UK and were possibly the easiest locomotive to introduce into traffic.
The 66s acquired over 75% of the freight duties that were previously entrusted to older locomotives, and as a result the locos appeared in all of the sectors - metals, petroleum, stone, intermodal and enterprise were all changed over to Class 66 haulage.

When America's Railroads began the wholesale replacement of steam power after World War II, one of the most lucrative portions of the huge diesel locomotive market was the streamlined, four-axle cab and booster unit for mainline freight operation.
