Topic: Mains (electric power)

In the News (Tue 29 Dec 09)

Electric power - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Electric power, often known as power or electricity, involves the production and delivery of electrical energy in sufficient quantities to operate domestic appliances, office equipment, industrial machinery and provide sufficient energy for both domestic and commercial lighting, heating, cooking and industrial processes.
Although electricity had been known to be produced as a result of the chemical reactions that take place in an electrolytic cell since Alessandro Volta developed the voltaic pile in 1800, its production by this means was, and still is, expensive.
For this reason, electric power is viewed as a natural monopoly.

Mains - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The term mains usually refers to the domestic electrical power supply (as in "I've connected the appliance to the mains").
The system of three-phase alternating current electrical generation and distribution was invented by a nineteenth century creative genius named Nikola Tesla.
Electric motors are much less efficient at the lower frequency, and must also be made more robust to handle the electrical losses and the extra heat generated.

The term mains usually refers to the domestic AC electrical power supply (as in "I've connected the appliance to the mains").
In Japan, the electrical power supply to households is at 100 V. Eastern and northern parts of Honshu (including Tokyo) as well as Hokkaido have a frequency of 50 Hz, whereas western Honshu (including Nagoya, Osaka, and Hiroshima), Shikoku, Kyushu and Okinawa operate at 60 Hz.
The system of three-phase alternating current electrical generation and distribution was invented by Nikola Tesla in the nineteenth century.

Although electricity had been known to be produced as a result of the chemical reactions that take place in an electrolytic cell since Alessandro Volta reported doing so in 1800, its production by this means was, and still is, expensive.
In 1831, Michael Faraday devised a machine that generated electricity from rotary motion, however it took almost 50 years for the technology to reach a commercially viable stage.
The need for additional power plants is primarily explained by Ohm's law : as losses increase in proportion to the square of the current, or load, and in proportion to the resistance, having long cable runs in the Edison system meant using dangerous voltages in some places, or expensive and large cables or both.

 Electric lawn mowers
Electric mowers should always be used with an RCD and should not be used on wet grass.
Electric mowers are best suited to smaller, more compact garden as then the flex does not need to be so long, they are also less likely to overheat than if used over an extensive area.
Battery powered mowers do have their place for particular circumstances, but until the technology develops they won’t be replacing petrol or mains electric machines for a while yet.

Electric fields occur whenever a voltage difference occurs, therefore electric fields are emitted from appliances which are plugged in even if they are switched off.
The main sources of AC magnetic fields in a home are transformers, motorised equipment, sloppy wiring inside the house walls, excess current carried by plumbing, and powerlines or underground power cables.
Mains Disconnection Relays are a simple yet effective and highly elegant way to omit Electro-Smog from installed power cables, WITHOUT expensive rewiring of the affected areas by using screened cables.

Power lines   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Electrical power lines generate strong electric and magnetic fields, at the mains frequency of 50 or 60 cycles per second.
If you live near a power line and run a loop of wire round your loft, the magnetic field is so powerful that you can tap off enough electric power for your household needs - and because it is free, you would effectively be stealing from the power company and would be breaking the law.
Power induced fields in your home can be reduced by careful rerouting of wires and lining of structural surfaces with shielding foil.

Mains - Art History Online Reference and Guide
Mains (sometimes just main) refers to the interconnected cables or pipes carrying a service to households and businesses, and to the service they supply.
Mains services are natural monopolies and therefore governments (either local or national) are usually heavily involved in their provision.
A special type of mains are traction power networks for the supply of electric trains with traction current used in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and some areas around New York.

Mains electricity - Enpsychlopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The term mains usually refers to the general purpose AC electrical power supply (as in "I've connected the appliance to the mains").
ANSI standard C84.1 and Canadian CAN3-C235 specify that the nominal voltage at the output should be 120 V and allows a range of 114 to 126 V. California deliberately runs in the voltage range 114 to 120 V to reduce power consumption, however the reasoning behind such a move is debatable.
A device at 120 V draws twice as much current as a device with the same power draw at 240 V. domestic clothes dryer requires 12.5 A at 240 V or 25 A at 120 V. The end result is that wiring must be larger, and each outlet supplies less power.
