  * Mainsail - (Boating): Definition
Mainsail: The principal sail of a sailing vessel.
The mainsail is prepared for raising by attaching its tack at the gooseneck and the clew at the outhaul as for a Laser.
The side opposite to that on which the mainsail is carried or, in the case of a square-rigged vessel, the side opposite to that on which the largest fore-and-aft sail is carried.

Mainsail -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
A mainsail is the most important sail raised from the main (or only) (A vertical spar for supporting sails) mast of a sailing vessel.
The modern (A rig of triangular sails for a yacht) bermuda rig uses a triangular mainsail as the only sail aft of the mast, closely coordinated with a (Any triangular fore-and-aft sail (set forward of the foremast)) jib for sailing upwind.
Traditional fore-and-aft rigs used a (An iron hook with a handle; used for landing large fish) gaff to control the top of the mainsail, sometimes setting a (A sail (or either of a pair of sails) immediately above the lowermost sail of a mast and supported by a topmast) topsail above it.

The Quest for the Perfect Shape
Furthermore, for a given sail the shape varies from the foot to the top, and the fast shape of a mainsail is different from that of a jib which is different from that of a #1 genoa, not to mention a spinnaker.
To understand sail shape it is useful to visualize the mainsail and the jib as a single "wing" (airfoil) with a slot in the middle.
When the distance from the leech of the genoa to the mainsail is even all the way from the boom to the hounds, the slot is said to be even.

 ITCA- Mast Tuning
Controlling mast bend is the first step towards controlling the mainsail, and controlling the mainsail allows us to fine tune the delicate balance between sails and keels.
Mainsail luffs are cut with a curve that has to approximate the mast bend.
The effect is that the mainsail is always sailing around in a slight header relative to the genoa.

 Sail Trim & Shape
Once the mainsail is hoisted, loosen the boom toping lift so the mainsail can assume the proper shape and swing freely from side to side.
In the second method, the boat is heaved-to and the mainsail is let out until it is luffing.
Since the boom is out over the water, the mainsail is doused (taken straight down) and may be flaked after the boat reaches the dock or once the mast is secured back to midline.

Cruising World - A Mainsail for all Seasons
The useful life span of a mainsail is largely dependent upon the strength and stability (ability to retain shape) of the sailcloth and its resistance to chafe and the sun’s ultraviolet rays.
A mainsail’s reef rows typically are spaced relatively evenly and roughly parallel to the foot of the sail at a workable distance from any battens.
A cruising mainsail is asked to perform on all points of sail, in almost all wind speeds, and in a challenging variety of sea states—and it’s expected to do so for many years across thousands of nautical miles.

 Sail Shape
Once the proper shape of the mainsail has been achieved, any changes in the tension of the boom vang or the mainsail's sheet will change the shape of the sail.
The mainsail's sheet not only determines the position of the boom in relationship to the deck but also places a downward pull on the leech (aft or back edge) of the mainsail.
One should note that when the backstay is tightened, the mainsail's sheet and boom vang may also have to be adjusted or the mainsail's shape will change.

Slicing effortlessly to weather is a byproduct of a well-built, well-trimmed mainsail working in unison with the hull, keel, and headsail.
All of this pure magic is made possible by a well-built, well-trimmed mainsail working with your keel to provide lift, and just the right headsail powering you forward.
In the first four articles of this series we looked at the various fibers that are used to make sailcloth, how they are incorporated into different fabrics, and how the fabrics are used in different panel layouts to take full advantage of their best qualities.

If the breeze increases significantly and you find that the boat is beginning to be overpowered, you can flatten the entry of the mainsail and move the draft forward by tensioning the luff with the cunningham.
More than likely your mainsail will be too full for the new breeze, a condition that will overpower the boat and create excessive weather helm for the person driving.
In this case, either have the driver briefly feather the boat up into the wind so the sail is less loaded, or have the mainsail trimmer briefly ease the mainsheet for the same effect, then you can tension the outhaul more easily.

Sail Propulsion - Revisiting a Mast-Aft Sailing Rig
A staysail was then rigged between the masts in place of the mainsail, and the boat regained 1 knot of speed while retaining its decreased leeway.
I was looking to discard the inefficient mainsail, and replace it with two clean leading-edge headsails (ala cutter), acting in a parallel, harmonious fashion, and with no mast spreader overlap so they might be sheeted in for optimum pointing.
The inner main-staysail will replace the Bermudian mainsail and perform a similar function in a more efficient manner, as its leading edge is not fouled by a mast and its foot not misformed by a boom.

But I had read plenty of articles about mainsail trim, and so, even though I had very little onboard experience with mains, I felt up to the task.
As it turned out, all the mainsail articles I had read were like a bad course in sex education—they explained what it was, all of its parts, and the technical reasons for using them, but not when, how, or why to make these things work.
