Topic: Mainstream Urban

Urban contemporary - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term urban contemporary was coined by the late New York DJ Frankie Crocker in the mid 1970s.
Upon occasion, an urban contemporary station will play classic soul music songs from the 1970s and early 1980s to satisfy the older end of the format, but their playlists are otherwise focused on music released within the last five years.
Urban contemporary stations are the main focus of the airplay statistics for the Billboard magazine Hot RandB/Hip-Hop Singles and Tracks chart, which calculates the most popular RandB and hip-hop singles in the United States.

The mainstream powers were less than receptive to tuning into a frequency they could not understand and thought would be confined to a trend (notwithstanding the entertainment industry and a few, select brands like the And 1's of the world who built their brands with urban consumers).
In the previous urban marketing neighborhood of Corporate America, the area of the company responsible for outreach to fls and Hispanics was the beneficiary of the lowest investment as it represented one segment, and a monolithic one at that.
Now, with the mainstreaming of the urban culture and the Eminem factor, the flood gates have opened and those in the mainstream are eager to build their brand home in that same urban zip code where all the marketing action is.

Urban market gardening isn't something I planned on doing 10 years ago, which is too bad, because if I had realized the potential then, I would have saved myself a lot of bitter trial and error experience.

Urban Indians are a geographically dispersed population characterized by cultural, linguistic, political and religious differences.
Rather than simply occupying a space within the melting pot of mainstream urban society, they created their own unique position - as dual citizens of two nations - fully able to function in the modern world through a belief and reliance on traditional, tribal values.
By carrying modern urban political methodologies back to the reservation to bolster historic practices and values, city Indians have enhanced social awareness and visibility both on and off the reservation.

Poor White Boys and the Future of Hiphop
People from or near urban areas may classify inner-city projects and east and west coast fl ghettos as the exemplar of poverty in the United States, while people in rural areas will immediately discuss rural representations such as trailers or the "rez" life of Native Americans.
Urban poverty has an advantage, however, in that it is the overwhelmingly represented narrative of mainstream hiphop, while the inclusion of rural and international narratives has only recently become more popular.
It is too much of a risk for the mainstream market to associate itself with white people from or near urban areas because they are often the predominating representations of middle/upper-class United States, and whose authenticity is often questioned.
