Santiago Province, Chile - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Santiago is one of the six provinces of the Santiago Metropolitan Region of Chile.
With the pass of centuries, there was generated in the Province, as in the whole country, an identity of predominantly European character together with hints of native character, thus setting in motion a process of homogenization of the population.
According to the census of 2002, Santiago Province has 4,728,443 inhabitants, of whom 2,244,497 are male and 2,483,946 female, meaning that the number of males is 92,39% that of females.

In the desert provinces the population is limited to the mining communities, and to the ports and supply stations maintained for their support and for the transport, smelting and export of their produce.
The twelve provinces first mentioned, which include the celebrated Vale of Chile, comprise only 17% of the area of the republic, but the census of 1895 showed that 72% of the total population was concentrated within their borders.
