Maitland is a city in the Lower Hunter region of New South Wales, Australia, on the Hunter River approximately 200 km by road north of Sydney and 30 km northwest of Newcastle.
Maitland is sometimes called the largest inland city in New South Wales, though Wagga Wagga also claims this title due to Maitland being only 25 km from the coast and an integral part of the Newcastle Metropolitan Area.
Maitland`s main industries are agriculture (174 establishments with agricultural activity2), tourism, mining, manufacturing, transport and construction industries.

New South Wales is bounded by the Pacific Ocean on the E., by Queensland on the N., by South Australia on the W. and by Victoria on the S. It lies between 28 and 38 S. lat., and 141 and 154 E. long.
South of Sydney the rivers are of less importance; the principal is the Shoalhaven, 260 m.
In the extreme south-east of New South Wales, at the head of the Genoa river, are sandstones with Archaeopleris howilti, which are an extension of the Lower Devonian beds of Victoria; while farther to the east, at Eden and Twofold Bay, are Upper Devonian sandstones.

Situated 160 km north of Sydney, on the mouth of the Hunter River, it is the predominant city within the Hunter Valley region, a significant coal shipping centre and Australia's largest provincial city (that is, the largest city that is not the capital of a state or territory).
The new settlement comprising convicts and a military guard, arrived at the Hunter River on March 27, 1804, in three ships, the Lady Nelson, the Resource and the James.
The south western suburbs are left out, as the STA bus coverage is only about 3/4 of the metro area, therefore, people who live in the southern suburbs have a lot of trouble getting around without cars as local buses generally finish by 6pm and the train service ends at 11.30 pm.

Maitland Railway Station is located just past the roundabout at the southernmost end of Church St. The line arrived at East Maitland in 1857 amidst much hoopla and reached West Maitland the following year.

The Right Reverend James Murray, then secretary to Cardinal Cullen, was appointed Bishop of Maitland, and, after being consecrated in the pro-cathedral of Dublin by Cardinal Cullen on 14 November, 1865, proceeded to his distant diocese, of which he took possession on 1 November, 1866.
The present Diocese of Maitland comprises that portion of New South Wales, which lies between Camden Haven and Red Head, stretching west as far as Wollar and Cassilis and north as far as Murrurundi.
