These towns are situated in a valley on the Hunter River, which is liable to sudden floods, to guard against which the river is protected by stone embankments at West Maitland, while there are flood-gates at East Maitland.
Maitland is the centre of the rich agricultural district of the Hunter valley, which produces maize, wheat and other cereals, lucerne, tobacco, fruit and wine; excellent coal also is worked in the vicinity.
East Maitland is the see of a Roman Catholic bishop, whose cathedral (St John's), however, is situated in the larger town.

Maitland is the junction of the North Coast line which continues to Brisbane.
The first section of the Main North Line was built from the port of Newcastle to Victoria Street, Maitland in 1857 and extended to Singleton in 1863, Muswellbrook and Murrurundi in 1872, Werris Creek and west Tamworth in 1878, Armidale in 1883 and Wallangarra, Queensland in 1888.
The bridge was built on pylons that failed to reach bed rock and it had to be replaced in the 1940s but due to the war the new bridge was not opened until 1 July 1946.

It describes an incident on March 28, '05 at a popular fishing spot on the Maitland river in Ontario.
On this date the river is just opening up with the spring thaw, having been jammed side-to-side with winter ice.
If this guy had been two feet further then he was it would of been a sad day on the river because no one was near to help him out if the ice had took him under.

Todays plan is that I carry a pile of stuff to cook dinner with, and then ride with Bindi to the river where we were supposed to be a couple of days ago.
The excitement at the river when I got there was first finding the camp (the river is a wide, marshy thing with lots of camp sites), then when I was organised I thought I'd try to take the front wheels off and replace some spokes now that I have the right length ones.
The first lot are a few millimetres too long so I built them three cross, two twist (normal three cross wheels are under, under, over for one twist, mine are under, over, under for two twists).
