Sarangani Province’s history dates back to the turn of the 15th Century when Sarip Kabungsuan of Arabia arrived in Cotabato Province in Mindanao to introduce Islam with the help of religious teachers.
Sarangani Province constitutes the seven municipalities formerly under South Cotabato Province, such as the coastal municipalities of Glan, Alabel, Malapatan, Kiamba, Maasim, and Maitum and the upland Municipality of Malungon.

The "Maitum Jars," as they are referred to now, are "unparalleled in Southeast Asia" in that it is an exceptional archaeological assemblage.
He told the forum at the municipal gym last Thursday that the shards depicting sketches of people could be older than the Maitum Jars because the latter were already portraits done in clay of individual persons while the former were still sketches of people.

MAITUM, Sarangani -- Amid a mid-morning sun and gentle breeze, grade-schooler Jerik Escatoto and several other children at a coastal village here lined by the beach with tiny turtles wiggling in their hands.
As they let go the turtle hatchlings, the children burst into cheers while some 60 one-day old marine turtles moved with their tiny flippers in racing to the shorelines, where incoming waves met and drag them out to their natural habitat.

Years back, DENR declared that the bats in Maitum were that of golden crowned flying foxes, which are rare fruit bats endemic only in the Philippines.
"There is possibility that the bats cross Sarangani Bay at night into the other side of the province to forage for food," she said.
Maitum information officer Beth Palma Gil said it was rather fortunate for the bats to inhabit Pinol because the predominantly Muslim community considers it taboo to eat bat.
