MAIZURU, Kyoto Pref., Oct 14, 2006 (Japan Times - McClatchy-Tribune Business News via COMTEX) -- As economic sanctions against Pyongyang approved Friday by the Cabinet closed Japanese ports to North Korean vessels, residents of Maizuru greeted the news with resignation, hoping vessels from other countries visit and soften the blow.
Although that number fell to 250 in 2005, Maizuru was still the main port of call in Japan for the country's vessels.
Maizuru, in turn, was the port of entry for about 2.8 billion yen worth of goods from the North in 2005, or 20 percent of all the state's exports to Japan.

KYOTO (Kyodo) Japan ordered a North Korean freighter Tuesday set to carry goods to the North -- in place of a North Korean ferry at the center of arms and espionage allegations -- not to leave port.
The 298-ton freighter Namsan 3, which arrived at Maizuru port in Kyoto Prefecture at around 7:30 a.m.
According to the coast guard office in Maizuru and a local harbor loading company, the cargo of the Namsan 3 was categorized as "sundries" and was being shipped at the request of a trading firm based in the city of Osaka.

Known as the "ASEAN specialist conference on the use of historical townscape and the creation of communities," the conference will be held November 6-7 at former Tatsuike Elementary School in Ryogaemachi, Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto City, under the sponsorship of the Kyoto Townscape Management Center and the Architectural Institute of Japan.
