This is particularly problematic in the Samyutta and Anguttara Nikayas.
For example, "S.i.100" means "Samyutta Nikaya, first volume, page 100 of the PTS romanized Pali edition." This is a standard scheme used widely by Pali scholars who, even today, rely on the PTS edition of the Canon as their common reference point.
This method is used for the Digha and Majjhima Nikayas.

According to the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta of the Samyutta Nikaya, the Buddha disclosed the Middle Path between extremes.
In the Discourse entitled "Delicately Nurtured" of the Anguttara Nikaya, the Buddha explained very clearly the luxurious life he led while he was at the palace as a Prince.
That is one extreme of life he had to confront, and on the other hand he underwent much suffering while he was practising austerities in association with some contem-porary ascetics.

 Sutta Pitaka
Recent scholarship suggests that a distinguishing trait of the Digha Nikaya may be that it was "intended for the purpose of propaganda, to attract converts to the new religion." 1
The "Middle-length" Discourses (Pali majjhima = "middle") consists of 152 suttas of varying length.
These range from some of the most profound and difficult suttas in the Canon (e.g., MN 1) to engaging stories full of human pathos and drama that illustrate important principles of the law of kamma (e.g., MN 57, MN 86).

The first sutta in the Majjhima Nikaya in which the Venerable Maha Kaccana plays a prominent role is the Madhupindika Sutta (MN 18), the Honeyball Discourse, a title assigned to it by the Buddha himself -- perhaps a unique instance of the Buddha's conferring a title upon a sutta spoken by a disciple.
As the entire process is said to be contemplated by a bhikkhu endowed with understanding, this also implies that he has the capacity for overcoming the bondage to feelings by means of insight into their conditioned origination.

An excellent example of a sutra reflecting this approach is the Sammaditthi Sutra (Majjhima Nikaya #9).

In the pali canon, the majjhima nikaya contains many of the most important suttas (discourses expounded by the Buddha).
A remarkably high percentage of the majjhima is completely relevant to the core teachings of the Buddha, whereas Digha nikaya (long discourses) has too many suttas on peripheral elements of Buddhism that are not essential elements of the path (to liberation).
The Majjhima Nikaya, along with choice parts of the pali canon, is the gold standard.
