Before the Iranian Revolution, the Majles was the lower house of Parliament from 1906 to 1979, with the upper house being the Senate.
The Majles first came into being during the Constitutional Revolution and was officially created by a clause in the Constitution of 1906.
The Senate Majles was used during the Pahlavi II and Islamic Republic eras until 2004.

Mar. (IPS) Continuing the harassment of the opponents, Iranian conservatives took aim Tuesday at the reformist-dominated Majles (parliament) by detaining an outspoken MM (Member of the Majles) for six hours before releasing her on bail.
Mohammad Reza Khatami, the younger brother of the President who leads the Majles largest reformist fraction and Mohsen Armin, the Secretary of the Organisation of Islamic Republic’s Mojahedeen (OIRM), a leftist pro-reform group, had called on the Speaker Hojjatoleslam Mehdi Karroubi, for an emergency meeting to review the "illegal and unconstitutional arrest" of Mrs.
But she had refused to obey, stating that as a parliamentary deputy, she was entitled to immunity from prosecution for remarks made in the Majles, adding that in her opinion any summons issued to her would be a violation of the constitution.

It was in this period, from 1941 to 1943, that Mossadegh arose as the leader and spokesman for the secular nationalist faction of the Majles that was to become the National Front.
Elected to the fourteenth Majles in 1943, Mossadegh spoke out strongly in opposition to continued foreign influence in Iran's government and economy, most specifically in the area of the already crucial oil industry.

When in December 1911 the Majles unanimously refused a Russian ultimatum demanding Shuster's dismissal, Russian troops, already in the country, moved to occupy the capital.
To prevent this, on December 20 Bakhtiari chiefs and their troops surrounded the Majles building, forced acceptance of the Russian ultimatum, and shut down the assembly, once again suspending the constitution.

The Supreme Leader appoints the six religious members of the Council of Guardians while the Iranian parliament, the Majles, selects the six lay members from candidates recommended by the judiciary, which is in turn selected by the Supreme Leader.
It is composed of the president, the speaker of the Majles, the judiciary chief, the clerical members of the Council of Guardians, and other members appointed by the Supreme Leader for 3-year terms.
