 Bernard Shaw - 'Major Barbara'
Read Bernard Shaw’s “Major Barbara”, and you will be surprised as to how easily you will be convinced that poverty is “the worst of our crimes”, that the Church is the instrument of capitalism, and that real progress can only be achieved by the power of gunpowder.
One of Shaw’s most powerful statements in “Major Barbara”, and one that echoes throughout the play is that “the greatest of our evils and the worst of our crimes is poverty”.
Thus, he attacks the Christian belief that “blessed are the poor”, and dismisses it as a sham to keep the poor, poor and weak.

Galway is a city long known to many Pittsburghers -- cab drivers speak casually of their friends the Rooneys -- not just as a colorful tourist gateway to the Aran Islands and the wilds of Connemara, but also for its internationally known literary life focused on the famous Kenny's Book Store.
For all its fame, the Druid is a wee venue -- 90 seats in an ancient building in the oldest part of town -- and even with a scaled-down set, PICT has had its ingenuity taxed in compressing a large show to fit.
The audience in Galway finds the seriocomic conflict among the warrior industrialist, his conventional wife, his Salvation Army daughter and her intellectual fiance as current as George Bush, Haliburton and Iraq, and during the intermission is happy to descant at length on the similarities.

So says Andrew Undershaft, the extremely wealthy owner of a tremendously successful English armaments business, in George Bernard Shaw´s play "Major Barbara." Undershaft, whose self-proclaimed religion is his wealth and his industry, inherited the business from a long line of Andrew Undershafts, each of whom was a foundling adopted by the corresponding previous Andrew Undershaft.
Undershaft moralizes when he speaks, but in actuality he scoffs at what he considers ordinary Christian morals of the kind professed by his daughter Barbara, who has joined the Salvation Army in her fervid desire to help the poor and has attained the rank of major.
She works at a shelter doling out bread and milk to the downtrodden and trying to find work for the unemployed, but her real goal is to bring them to "salvation" by raising them to a higher state of spirituality.

Texas Monthly March 1996: Major Barbara
In the years when she held public office, from 1967 to 1979, half of it spent in the Legislature and the other half in Congress, she was a shrewd and ambitious politician.
From her first major public address, delivered on the subject of race to the Texas Association of Broadcasters in 1968, to the end of her days, Jordan believed that the way for minorities to succeed in America was to embrace the majority culture.
That was fanciful talk in 1972, but by 1976, when she gave the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention, the idea that Barbara Jordan might run for governor or U.S. senator in 1978 and win seemed within the realm of possibility.
