Like the artist-protagonist of the film, Zran's camera captures numerous orientalist details from the culture, but the exploits of a young boy who models for the artist and who ultimately turns to crime to survive offer a telling counterpoint to the voyeur's surface-deep intervention.
Although the film suffers from being too pretty - everyone in the village seem always to be wearing their best clothes - it is nevertheless a remarkable, highly stylized work that, at its best, evokes the work of Glauber Rocha.
With documentary intensity the film is constructed around the slow buildup of details from the backbreaking life of a family of farmworkers.

Major League (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Major League was a 1989 film written and directed by David S. Ward.
Major League was notable for featuring several actors who would go on to stardom: Wesley Snipes and Rene Russo were relative unknowns before the movie was released, while Dennis Haysbert remained best known as Pedro Cerrano until he portrayed US President David Palmer on the television series 24.
The film also spawned two sequels—Major League II in 1994 and Major League: Back to the Minors in 1998—though neither received the worldwide critical acclaim garnered by the first film.

In typical sports film fashion, the group shows promise when their backs are against the wall and may have what it takes to make a run at the playoffs.
The film has such an energy that the conclusion, which will come as no surprise to followers of baseball movies, is nearly as exciting as the steps taken to arrive there.
Director David S. Ward (who also made the dismal Major League 2) does a fine job of directing the baseball sequences; the montage capturing the team's rise to the top of the standings is one of the better in sports films I have seen.

Predictable and silly, "Major League 3" offers a good performance from Bakula holds together what's otherwise a fairly low-key(and low-budget) effort.

Major League: Back To The Minors / zero stars (1998)
Luckily, these films don't pop up often: they circulate through the minds of brain-dead producers and directors, and after coming to the realization that they are sinning against the film industry, these movies don't even see the light of day.
"Major League: Back To The Minors" is exactly like that: audiences would like nothing more than to crush the skulls of its creators with a baseball bat after seeing it.
"Major League: Back To The Minors" uses all of these old tricks, but much more of them, and often times they look and sound more painful than they probably really are.

DVD Times - Major League   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
The film just doesn’t take itself as seriously as some other baseball films that perhaps fail because they are far too pretentious, and its ability to continually find something funny within any situation is a great virtue that never allows the narrative to become stale.
The film is straightforward and very predictable, and the romantic sub-plot between Berenger and Russo doesn’t quite work (the music that seems to pronounce each of their scenes is awfully melodramatic), but it’s a movie that has enough laughs to rise it above its own clichés and enough lovable, screwball characters to keep you entertained.
The film is presented in its original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and anamorphic enhanced.

Sure it's corny, and yes, Major League was on the receiving end of a lot of scorn from contemporary critics when it hit the theaters.

RJ Stewart's screenplay highlights one of the great-in jokes of American team sports - how players are transformed during the close season by fame, fortune or adversity; here, the team is split asunder when Vaughn attempts to clean up his image and when Pedro Cerrano (Haysbert) switches bafflingly from voodoo to Buddhism.
