Most Valuable Player Award on Baseball Almanac
There have been three different "official" most valuable player awards in Major League Baseball since 1911; the Chalmer's Award (1911-1914), the League Award (1922-1929), and this is the third, and currently awarded, version simply referred to as the Most Valuable Player Award.
This one was first awarded in 1931 and its full title is the Baseball Writers Most Valuable Player Award, or the M.V.P. by the rest of us, and it is presented annually by the Baseball Writers Association of America.
It is considered by Major League Baseball as the only "official" most valuable player award and symbolizes the pinnacle of a player's personal achievement during any single season of play.

Most Valuable Player Award - BR Bullpen
The Most Valuable Player Award (or MVP) in Major League Baseball is given to a player in each league who has contributed the most to the success of the player's team.
The first two were awarded in the 1910s and 1920s, however the award did not become an annual one until 1931.
The creation of this award was due to the controversy in the American League from the previous year in which the company gave an automobile in to the batting champion in each league.

Sammy Sosa (left) and Rafael Palmeiro are among the current and former players subpoenaed by the House Government Reform Committee to appear March 17 in Washington at a hearing on steroid use.
Major League Baseball indicated yesterday that it would fight federal subpoenas issued to some of the game's biggest names, including ex-slugger Mark McGwire and current players Jason Giambi and Sammy Sosa.
Ostensibly, the players union and league contention would be that baseball's tough new drug testing program has reduced steroid use by players, down from 11 percent four years ago to 1 percent to 2 percent, numbers Manfred said he presented to committee members before subpoenas were issued.

Major League Baseball Most Valuable Player Award - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the game of baseball, both amateur and professional, it is tradition to annually recognize the one player in the league who has contributed the most to the success of the player's team.
The American League allowed players to win the award only once, leading to unusual results like Babe Ruth's 1927 (one of the greatest offensive seasons of all time) not being eligible for the award (although Lou Gehrig arguably deserved the award in 1927 whether Ruth was eligible or not).
After that, the belief arose that the Most Valuable Player ought to be a position player, based on two factors, one being that pitchers had their own award, and the other being that pitchers could not be considered as valuable as position players since they do not play every day.
