Chords are also said to have a function in their diatonic scale, which relates to the expected resolution of each chord within a key.
When a chord progression resolves to a III or IV chord, it is called a Tonic Substitution, because the stable III or VI chord is being used as a substitute for the expected I chord.
The dominant seventh chord is useful to composers because of the fact that it is a major chord with a very strong sound, that also includes a tritone between the third and seventh of the chord.

Played in the open position, the index finger is not used at all; instead, the strings which would be fretted by it are played open, and the result is an E major chord, giving this shape its name.
It is worth noting for players in the rock and metal styles that a power chord with its root on the sixth string is played using this shape; the high three notes (and sometimes the first octave) are not voiced.

This chord is seldom used, but when it is called for, it is often notated Dm7b6, and is one of the few exceptions to the rule that most chords are written in terms of odd numbered extensions above the seventh.
The phrygian mode is used occasionally over a minor seventh chord, although often the chord is written as m7b9 as a hint to the improviser that the phrygian scale is to be used.
As with the major scale over a major seventh chord, the fourth step of the scale (C in the case of G mixolydian) is somewhat of an avoid note over a dominant seventh chord.

In F major, the result would look like this: G-----------------------------2--3--5--7--9--10 D-----------------0--2--3--5------------------- A--------0--1--3------------------------------- E--1--3---------------------------------------- and you can see that the 2nd note and the 9th note are both G, and 3rd note and the 10th note are both A, etc. Sometimes G will be called the 2nd or the 9th, depending on the circumstances.
However, you can form the C major chord, by using the 1st, 3rd, and 5th notes of the scale: C, E, and G. (This is why the three notes of the C major chord are called 1st, 3rd, and 5th: they are the 1st, 3rd and 5th note of the C major scale).
You can refer to the chord simply by the number of the scale note that is the root note: so we say that in the key of G major, D major is the fifth chord.

The C major chord is comprised of two whole steps (from the note C to the note E, a major 3rd interval) and one and one-half steps (from the note E to the note G, a minor 3rd interval).
Notice that the spelling of the C major chord form in Figure 1 is C + E + G + C + E. You could also add the G on the 6th or low E string at the third fret by placing the 3rd finger on that fret.
This same logic also applies to a voicing of the C chord that includes the low E note on the 6th string which would result in E + C + E + G + C + E. The chord might then be notated as a C/E chord.

Recall that chords come in two basic parts, a letter name (C, C#, etc.) also known as a root note (tonic, 1), and a descriptive part that abbreviates the name of the chord (is a short-hand for all the intervals of each distinct note from the root note).

Steely Dan - The Mu Major Chord
The chord, or rather the name mu major, was invented by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, quite possibly while sitting at the piano working on their early demos in the late 60s/early 70s.
The simplest keyboard voicing is obtained by starting with a simple major chord: left hand plays the root (1st), and the right hand plays a root position triad (1st, 3rd, 5th).
One of the key features of the mu major chord is the dissonance that occurs between notes that are close together.

Steely Dan - The Mu Major Chord - Part 2
Two of these voicings have the second and major third next to each other creating a slight dissonance, and it is these two dissonant voicings that are nearly always used whenever a type I mu major chord appears in a Steely Dan song.
For type II mu majors with four notes (as with type I mu majors) there are three possible voicings, but nearly all of the type II mu chords used in Steely Dan songs use the same "classic" voicing.
This voicing of the mu major chord is the typical late-period Steely Dan mu major chord, used in songs such as Deacon Blues ("call me Deacon Blues") and Black Cow ("it's over now").

MMC presents... Dansm's Guitar Chord Theory: Major/Minor/Diminished Chord Theory
Whether a chord is major or minor depends on the interval, or musical distance, between the root and third, and the root and fifth.
If you try to build a chord on the G#, the three pitches are G#-B-D. The interval between G# and B is a minor third, but the interval between G# and D is not a perfect fifth (seven half steps), it is six half steps.
I suggest moving on to my discussion of chords in major keys to complete your understanding of chords in keys.

The next diagram shows the chords that are in the key of G. As you can see, the G is the I, the C is the IV, and the D7 is the V in the I- IV - V progression.
The VI chord is called the relative minor, because it shares many notes with the tonic (I chord).
As shown earlier, the formula for a major chord is 1 3 5 hence a G major (GM) chord consists of the first, third, and fifth notes of the G major scale, G B D (refer to the circle of fifths chart).
