Major suit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the card game contract bridge, the major suits are spades (♠) and hearts (♥).
The major suits are of prime importance for tactics and scoring as they outrank the minor suits while bidding and also outscore them.
Much of the tactics of bidding in bridge revolves around the attempt by partners to find a "fit" in one of the major suits that will allow them to easily make a game contract.

 [No title]
Raise of trump suit = one of top three in trump, no outside A. Opener's suit has to be good enough to guarantee at most one loser opposite a void (must have 2 of top 3).
Failing that, bid 6 of the trump suit with the A or K and 6C without either of those (if the suit is clubs you can't differentiate).
Double is either a 4 card major plus a longer minor, or a balanced hand with a 3 HCP range starting at 1 HCP higher than the upper limit of the NT (for a 10-13 NT would be a 14-16 HCP hand),or a strong minor suit, or could be long, weak diamond suit.

 AUC: The Major-Suit Openings
Almost everyone opens the hand 1NT if the long suit is a minor (although that was not necessarily the case 40 years ago, and in Roman, for instance, 5332 was not considered balanced).
When you open a strong notrump and partner has 4 of your major, there is a good chance partner also has enough values to bid.
The simplest is for minimum suit bids to show shortness, 3M to show 6+ cards without shortness, and 3NT 5332 or 5422.

If they are both the same strength and one is a major suit (H,S) and the other is a minor (D,C) then open the major.
If both suits are majors, open spades first, unless you have 17+ points, in which case you'll open hearts and bid spades (this is called Reversing and shows a hand of at least an ace better than regular opening hands).
Which suit you bid is the same as if you didn't have a fit, except you are more likely to have to bid a 4 card suit.

For minor suit openings a new suit is always forcing raise: Don't worry about partner's pass when you show a new suit with so much points...
If you are holding at least three or four cards of your partner's major suit, you can single raise your partner's opening suit one level (Remember that your partner has 5+ cards in that suit).

When the partnership has found a suit fit and one or both partners know it, it is common to slightly change how you add up the points in your hand.
It tells your partner that you have a fit for her suit and that you have enough points to get to game if she has more than a minimum opening hand.
Partner knows that you have a fit for her suit.] Also note that partner has a very good idea of how many points (or the maximum number of losers we have), so she can make an intelligent guess as to how high to play the hand.
