MAJURO, Marshall Islands (Marianas Variety, Nov. 12) — The Marshall Islands Ministry of Health on Wednesday warned Marshall Islanders of a "dramatic" increase in the number of tuberculosis cases in the country.
A report last month from Arkansas, where an estimated 5,000 Marshall Islanders live, said in 2003, there were 44 new TB cases in northwest Arkansas, eight of which were Marshall Islanders including one highly contagious.
During the three year period, 2001-2003 there was a total of 296 new cases diagnosed in the Marshall Islands, an average of nearly 100 per year.

Additional study of the causes and actual incidence of cancers in the Marshall Islands would be a major aid to prevention and control of cancer in the future, the doctors said.
The study compared the rate of a variety of cancers in the Marshall Islands to the rate in the U.S. "Cancer incidence rates were higher in virtually every category in the Marshall Islands compared with the United States for the period 1985-1994," the study said.
It pointed out that the Marshall Islands lung cancer rates were 3.8 times higher in males and 3.09 times higher in females, cervical cancer rates were 5.8 times higher, and liver cancer rates were 15.3 times higher in males and 40 times higher in females compared with U.S. rates.

The Majuro and Pohnpei branches are in the capitals of the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia, respectively.
The bank does not feel confident that it could move from a negative to a positive return given the current economic conditions in the Marshall Islands and Federated States of Micronesia, he said.
