  Majuscule
Majuscules or capital letters (in the roman alphabet: "A", "B", "C"...) are one type of case in a writing system.
Majuscules and minuscules are sometimes also known as uppercase (or upper case) and lowercase letters, respectively (for example, in computer programming).
Note: the use of majuscules for emphasis in situations where bold[?] or italic type[?] would suffice is generally considered to be a bad habit[?], albeit one that is quite common in the United States.

Capital letters - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Capital letters (also simply called capitals or caps) are also known as upper case; manual typesetters kept them in the upper drawers of a desk, keeping the more frequently used minuscule letters on the lower shelf.
When an acronym or initialism requires a string of uppercase letters, it is frequently set in small capitals, to avoid overemphasizing the word in mostly lowercase running text.
Capitalization is the writing of a word with its first letter in upper-case and the remaining letters in lower-case.

The letter a is one of the more interesting ones, with a range of variations in form, some of which are regarded as diagnostic in the identification of particular scripts.
The uncial A, while a majuscule letter, shows a form similar to that of many later minuscule scripts, with the curved diagonal line forming an upper loop and a closed loop attached.
The letter a could be changed in form in a ligature, most notably in the æ dipthong found in Old English.

In alphabets with a case distinction, majuscules are used for: capitalization, acronyms, better legibility, for example on signs and in labeling, and emphasis in Some languages.
In printed material where acronyms require a string of uppercase letters, they are frequently reduced in size by a point or more to make them easier to read.
In electronic communications, it is often considered in very poor "netiquette" to type this way because it can be harder to read and because typing in all majuscules can be seen as tantamount to shouting.

"Majuscule" is the counterpart to "minuscule" when it comes to letters, but it never developed a broader sense (despite the fact that its Latin ancestor "majusculus" has the broad meaning "rather large").
Not surprisingly, the adjective shares the noun's specificity, referring only to large letters or to a style using such letters.
