Mak Dizdar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mak (Mehmedalija) Dizdar (born 1917 in Stolac, Bosnia-Herzegovina - died 1971 in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina) was a Bosniak poet, considered one of the greatest Yugoslav poets of the second half of the twentieth century.
After having finished the elementary school in Stolac and high school (Gymnasium) in Sarajevo, Dizdar spent his World War II years as a supporter of Communist Partisans and, frequently, moving undercover from place to place in order to avoid NDH authorities' attention.
Mak Dizdar also fought against forced influence of the Serbian language on the Bosnian language, as Dizdar called it, in his article "Marginalije o jeziku i oko njega", Zivot, XIX/11 - 12, Sarajevo, 1970, 109-120.

Between 1927-1928, language experts gathered to discuss what letters in the Latin alphabet were in accordance with the rules and the structure of the Turkish language.
Another aim of the Association was to eliminate the discrimination between the language used by the ordinary people in the street and the language used by the administration and the intellectuals.

Learning Languages as “Culture” with CALL
Even such eminent linguists as MAK Halliday have described "knowing a language" as a disposition which is partially cognitive and partially neuromuscular but, for some reason, neither volitional nor emotional nor ethical.
This is, in fact, what many language learners prefer to do, even at the price of occasional (or even frequent) losses in communicative and social effectiveness in dealing with native speakers of the language learned.
"Knowing a language" has to include the anthropological dimension, not only to be better equipped for survival in a globalized job market but also (let us add, even at the risk of seeming sanctimonious) out of intellectual honesty: out of the desire to see what languages are really like, behind their fig-leaf of rationality.
