The Makahiki season was the Hawaiian Thanksgiving, in honor of the god Lono.
The second period, usually beginning some time in the month of November, was a time of celebration, of hula dancing, of sports (boxing matches, sliding on sleds, surfing, canoe races, relays, and swimming), of singing and of feasting.
Captain Cook reached the Hawaiian Islands during the Makahiki season in 1778.

No one can really say what the glee level must have risen to at that first Makahiki in 1911, but if it was half that of yesterday's event, it's no wonder they've kept the fun and games going for 94 years.
This year's Makahiki theme was special — the whole event was a celebration of the 75th anniversary of Cub Scouting and the 95th anniversary of Boy Scouting in America.

The State of Hawai`i’s recognition of the right of Native Hawaiian prisoners to practice their religion was a result of negotiations initiated by the Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation (“NHLC”), on behalf of ten Native Hawaiian inmates.
Sprenger said that the Hawaiian prisoners at Watonga often feel “alone and isolated – as if they’ve been banished from their land” and the right to gather together, to pray, chant, and dance, and to express their spiritual beliefs, is life-affirming and re-connects them with their `aina.

The "Makahiki" is a designated period of time following the harvesting season when wars and battles were ceased, tributes and taxes were paid by each district to the ruling chief, sporting competitions between villages (districts) were organized and festive events were commenced.

The word "Makahiki" in Hawaiian means "year." In ancient Hawaii the year was calculated by the rising of the seven stars we know as the Pleiades.
