Makapu‘u is the extreme eastern end of the Island of O‘ahu in the Hawaiian Islands, comprising the remnant of a ridge that rises 647 feet (197 meters) above the sea.
Makapu‘u Point State Wayside is that part of eastern end of the Island encompassing Makapu‘u Head and the lighthouse at Makapu‘u Point.
Makapu‘u Beach Park and Kaupō Beach Park – All of the rocky shoreline and pocket beaches between the sea cliffs at Makapu‘u Point and the State Research Pier (Makai Pier) are beach parks open to the public.

On October 1, 1909, the light from another bright, bulging eye was seen on the rocky point of Makapu`u as the giant lens in the Makapu`u lighthouse was illuminated for the first time.

The main series of tidepools is on the most windward (east) side of Makapuu Head in view of the Makapuu Lighthouse perched high along the cliffs.
The paved Makapuu Lighthouse Road itself is 1.4-mile long (one-way) The lookout (above the lighthouse) elevation is 560-ft while the pillboxes on the opposite peak is 647-ft.
While HTMC and Sierra Club both hike the regular Makapuu Lighthouse Road, the hike down to the tidepools from the road is an available option with the HTMC which generally considers it more difficult and hazardous than the road-route itself.

WAIMANALO — Windward residents are comparing the road around Makapuu Point to the stretch of road closed by falling rocks in Waimea, and they want it fixed before anyone is injured.
The Waimanalo Neighborhood Board held a press conference at Makapuu yesterday, during which members asked the state and federal governments to quickly come up with a study for an alternate route along the coast.
Makapuu is a concern for the state, she said, but has not been declared an emergency.

The Department of Transportation hopes to hold a public informational meeting about its Makapuu rock-scaling project next month to address what it calls an "existing rockfall hazard." The project, a temporary fix before a permanent solution is found, is expected to go out to bid by May, with work starting next year.
While next year's rock-scaling project at Makapuu Point is temporary, the Department of Transportation said a permanent fix is needed for the sake of public safety.
DOT officials said the permanent Makapuu project is in the survey and design phase and is not projected to begin until February 2004.

Usually one does not think of it that way, but the Makapuu Lookout is actually the head of a _valley_, the easternmost valley in the entire Koolau Range matter of fact.
Makapuu Lighthouse, and then down to Pele's Chair, that rock formation at the bottom of the east ridge of Makapuu Valley.
Then I looked at the other side, and saw the west ridge of the Valley, and decided to ascend it to the top and then come back to the Lookout, thus completing a circumnavigation of the Valley.

A dirt road leads to the ridge line on the mountain side of the lookout, where a bunker is visible on the top of Makapuu Head.
Makapuu is my favorite place in the world.

The Makapuu Lighthouse trail is located on the south shore of Oahu between the famous Sandy Beach and Sea Life Park, about 20 minutes east of Waikiki.
Two lookout platforms are located at the top of the paved trail providing an unobstructed view of Makapuu Beach, Rabbit Island, and a good portion of the Windward Oahu.

It was an ideal day for this hike, with a cloudless summit all the way, high clouds to block the sun, and brisk trades to keep us cool.
Man Friday was touched by the HTMC VP's offer but declined as he believed he would need to jog the 3 miles to the Makapuu lookout to get warmed up for the hike.

Surf with wave faces as high as 20 feet began pounding Sandy and Makapuu last night, resulting in a rare closure of those beaches and Hanauma Bay, where ocean surge poses a hazard to snorklers and beachgoers.
The ocean safety staff is working with police and civil defense personnel to keep people away from the closed beaches, which will be reopened when conditions are deemed safe.

Makapuu Lookout is a three mile round trip from Kalanianaole Highway to the lookouts above Makapuu Light and back.
By avoiding the ridge hike from the lookout down to the Makapuu Saddle that is a part of Stuart Ball's Makapuu Point loop hike, our hike remains on a paved road all the way, the old access road to the former Coast Guard station just behind the lookout.
If you are adventurous, and made the hike in something more substantial than slippers, you can climb the ridge behind the lookout and inspect the old wartime bunkers.

This ONE-WAY hike is actually a combination of two trails: the Makapuu Ridge Trail and the Tom-Tom Trail.
Technically-speaking, there's a stretch of trail between the Makapuu Ridge Trail turn-off and the Tom-Tom Trail start (Marconi Pass) that is unnamed.
