The old mill town of Makarora had only about half a dozen houses, and except for the Martins, were all rotten and fallen down with ferns growing out of the timber.
So one side of the river was the small flat with the derelict mill town where only the Martins lived, and the other side of the river was the sheer papa cliff.
We were trapped on a small piece of river bed between the raging river and the sheer papa cliff.

The Makarora River is in the Otago region of the South Island of New Zealand.
The headwaters are in Mount Aspiring National Park, on the eastern flanks of the Southern Alps near Haast Pass, which is the saddle between the Makarora and Haast River valleys.
The Makarora flows south into the northern end of Lake Wanaka after passing the small community of Makarora.

In fact the river was so low, the boat couldn't make it all the way up to Kerin Forks, and we had to bail out about 25 minutes walk short of it's normal docking point.
The Young River is crossed just upstream of the hut, and the track then follows the true-left of the Young for the rest of the day.
We reached the Makarora confluence and made an easy crossing of no more than knee depth (but be wary, because the Makarora can get a lot deeper than this, even during average flows), and then trudged down the state highway for the three or so kilometres back to Makarora.

The river was crystal clear with a blue tinge and icy cold, fed by the glaciers in the surrounding upper valleys.
Trout and salmon are common in the lakes and rivers of the coastal plains and Scaup, Southern Crested Grebe, Paradise Duck and Mallard inhabit the waterways.
We had several river crossings over the course of the day via suspension bridges, which are actually removed a little later on in the season to preclude the possibility of avalanche damage or washouts in flood conditions.

The road from Haast follows the river valley gradually upwards to the Gates of Haast, where the river plunges through a narrow chasm.
The climate changes almost instantly, with the rainfall dropping dramatically on this side of the mountains and the lush rainforest soon being replaced by alpine scrub and tussock.
After a relatively short distance, the river opens out into Lake Wanaka, the banks of which the road follows until it reaches “The Neck” where it crosses over to the banks of Lake Hawea.

Mt Aspiring National Park, encompassing over 350,000 hectares of the Southern Alps from the Haast River in the north to the Humboldt Mountains in the south, was gazetted as New Zealand’s tenth national park in 1964.
Fish River, flowing south from Haast Pass to join the Makarora River, is typical of the Park’s hundreds of rivers and streams, running fast and clear between storms and thundering malevolently through its gorge during one of the Park’s many heavy downpours.
Conditions were almost perfect: the forest was being soaked by the beginnings of a steady nor’west rain, bringing forth the rich colours of wet vegetation and shiny fl rock, but the river itself still ran low and clear with no sign yet of the flood that was undoubtedly on its way.

As the rain increased we climbed on a track and descended to cross (eventually!) the Wilkin River to the Kerrin Forks Hut.
The radio didn't provide the communication necessary to inform the transport operator we required an earlier pick-up, so we waited at the forks and waved down a boat and within an hour a large jet-boat was there to pick us up.
Blasting down the river and spinning 360-degree turns was one way to eat up the remaining kilometres and was a highlight of the trip.

Makarora Chalets: mainly various sizes of A-frame chalets but T & N were in an old cobwebby bungalow up the back opposite the village school.
Lovely rolling cycling past flax, rata, rain forest, over several rivers, back to the coast at Bruce Bay where the sea looked grey and not very friendly then inland again to the town of Fox Glacier but no chance of seeing Mt Cook as the cloud was too low.
A picnic had been planned but it was decided the weather was too "iffy" so after collecting everybody off the road we drove alongside the Buller River and through the Buller Gorge to a late lunch at Beechwoods Café in Murchison - the weather had cleared and it was burning hot here.

The ice occupying the two lake basins was connected over a low pass now called the Neck, and the lake basins had a similar glacial history.
The first European to reach the lake was Nathaniel Chalmers, who in 1853, accompanied by two Maoris, walked from Tuturau in Southland to Wanaka via the Kawarau River and returned by raft down the Clutha River.
The only parts of the lake shores that can be reached easily from public roads are at the south end of the lake and on the north-east end from the Neck to the head of the lake.
