Makaton (trademark) is a system of communication that uses a vocabulary of "key word" manual signs and gestures to support speech, as well as graphic symbols to support the written word.
Makaton was developed in the early 1970s in the UK for communication with residents of a large hospital who were both deaf and intellectually disabled.
Makaton is run by the MVDP (Makaton Vocabulary Development Project) which controls the copyright to Makaton and depends on the associated income for its funding.

Makaton users are first encouraged to communicate using signs, then gradually, as a link is made between the word and the sign, the signs are dropped and speech takes over.
Makaton is rapidly spreading into the wider community, with requests for training to use signs and symbols from supermarket staff, youth groups, theatre groups, bus drivers, the police, museum staff, people working in sports and leisure, faith communities.
For example, it is important to understand what a visit to the dentist is all about, to understand about the medication you are taking and its effects, to become aware of danger such as fire or danger from electricity, to have confidence to travel on public transport, and to have access to public buildings.

Everyone needs to communicate in one way or another, that is why we use British sign language and Makaton, makaton is a simple way to communicate, all it is, is sign language but simpler, it is ideal for children with a hearing impairment.

I work with families who have a child with ASD and have often been asked whether it is useful to use Makaton with their children.
I am sure that Makaton works really well with children with other disabilites and I know some Speech and language therapists do promote the use of Makaton for children with ASD.
I don't want to sound too negative about it, although i am aware i probably have, and I certainly don't want to put families off, but I really think it is worth considering whether it is appropriate for your child and will increase their ability to communicate or just add to their anxieties.

The easiest way to learn is at a Makaton Workshop, as with all Sign Language the only way to really learn it is through being taught first hand, and by being demonstrated, and then reinforcing your knowledge with regular use - however it can now be learnt by distance learning.
Makaton have produced a parent and training pack suitable for people working with children under the age of 8, so you can learn together, and the video even includes children signing - you may be able to borrow this resource from your local library.
I have a copy and you can sing along to any of the 19 Nursery Rhymes, including favourites like the 'Wheels on the Bus', 'Old McDonald had a farm' and learn the signs at the same time.

Some of the others in my team were using Makaton to communicate with the children.
I have got a few handouts showing the signs, etc but as I haven't had to use it I've forgotten most of it - it was very easy to pick up at the time.
I've posted up a note on four Makaton BBC TV programmes beginning on Thursday (11TH) this week - you may or may not have read it - I get a bit lost somtimes.
