Makerfield consists of the southern part of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan.
Makerfield is, and has historically been, one of the safest Labour seats in the country.

Compared to the 1997 general election, four out of the five constituencies where Labour saw the biggest drop in its share of the vote were in Wales: the worst fall was in Islwyn with a 34.8 per cent drop.
A third trend on 10 June, and also in the Scottish parliament election on 6 May, was the significant vote for parties standing to the left of Labour or perceived by the electorate to be so, particularly in Scotland.

The constituency is part of the Neath and Port Talbot local authority area, which voted Yes in the 1997 referendum by a majority of 18,267, which was 66% of the vote in that area - the biggest single Yes percentage in Wales.
A very middle class constituency, it has the fifth highest proportion of non manual workers in the country (78.9% of its workforce) and over a third of its adult population possess higher educational qualifications, compared with a national average of 13% (according to the 1991 census).

Ian is a hard-working MP on behalf of the constituency and the country and we're sure the good wishes of Ashton residents go with him.

Several conspicuous Scotch carpetbaggers sit for English constituencies, none more egregious than Ian McCartney, MP for Makerfield and recently appointed to the cabinet as party chairman, whose Caledonian origins are not worn lightly.
Meantime an Edinburgh parliament and executive (which are nicely inbred, so that by the latest election more than half of MSPs had served in the executive) are responsible for a wide range of matters within Scotland.
But what absolutely no one imagined was that, once a parliament had been created in Dublin, it would be heavily subsidised by the British taxpayer - while the government at Westminster was dominated by Irish politicians.

It was created in 1885 as a division of the Parliamentary county of Lancashire, and covered Abram, Haigh, Ince in Makerfield, Orrell and Pemberton.
In 1918 it was reformulated to cover the urban districts of Abram, Ashton in Makerfield, Billinge, Ince, Orrell, Standish with Langtree, along with the parish of Shevington from Wigan Rural District.
The constituency ceased to exist with the implementation of the 1983 boundary changes and was replaced by the Makerfield Parliamentry constituency.

McCartney, Labour MP for Makerfield and party chairman for the last year, is keen to promote ‘Project 21st Century Party’, which allows party organisations to be more out-looking and less concerned with arcane party rules and procedures.
They are likely to increase that to 15 in the next Parliament, and the Conservatives are set to go from zero to at least two Black and Asian MP’s.
McCartney said new members must be welcomed in and the party must "provide opportunities to participate in the party at every level and to be recognised for their personal worth." He said Labour had done a lot, but there was "A hell of a lot more to do", including appointments to public bodies.

The Tory incumbent was anti-wind power and, obviously, a Tory; so I couldn't vote for him (memories on the 80s will not budge).
