Makoto Shinkai - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shinkai Makoto (新海誠) is the director, animator, and principle voice actor of two popular anime.
Some months later in June 2000, around the time of PlayStation 2 and the introduction of DVDs, Makoto was inspired to begin Hoshi no Koe (Voices of a Distant Star) by drawing a picture of a girl in a cockpit grasping a cell phone.
Makoto Shinkai has recently completed work on his latest effort, the 90 minute long Kumo no Mukou Yakusoku no Basho ("The place promised in our early days").

 TheCritics.org: Movie Review
Most notably, the viewer will revel in the stunning graphical work that Shinkai has created – the pictures are a stunning blend of 3D animation and traditional artwork unlike anything else that has been brought to the screen this year, or any before it.
Shinkai has also gone the extra mile in using “effects,” including that of sunlight splashes as the “camera” pans across the screen, and plenty of other camera tricks to make the action appear fast and furious, just as it should.
Watch for Makoto Shinkai in the near future – with a modicum of motivation, animated films are about to be brought into a brand new era of production quality.

 Makoto Shinkai
For Family Guy fans, there are no freakin' sweeter words than "Never Before Seen." A triumphant homecoming for the Griffins, Stewie Griffin is not so much a movie as it is a not-yet-aired three-episode story arc enhanced with a home-video-exclusive "red carpet premiere" prologue and an epilogue (capped, of course, with a fart joke).
Makoto Shinkai made an impressive debut as a writer-director in Voices of a Distant Star (OVA, 2002); The Place Promised in Our Early Days (OVA, 2004) is his first studio work.
The animation is largely restricted to camera moves over still artwork and CG objects, but Shinkai is a skillful enough director to tell this melancholy sci-fi romance through the strong music and vocal tracks.

AML-List Review: Voices of a Distant Star
The existential nature of the story is partially explained by the fact that Makoto Shinkai created the whole thing on his (considerably enhanced) desktop computer, a mix of digitized hand-drawn cells and computer-generated animation.
Also included on the DVD is a similarly moody short titled "She and Her Cat," cut three different ways, and a (clumsily subtitled) interview in which Shinkai talks about making movies the same way that the novelist creates a work that is completely independent and individualized.
Shinkai has definitely found his oeuvre and is sticking to it.

Not only do those problems arise the further she travels from home chasing after the invaders, but there is also the fact that traveling at light-speed keeps her unnaturally young, as opposed to her beloved Noboru who continues to age at a normal rate back on the earth...
Shinkai did everything when he had created this anime; he wrote, storyboarded, produced and directed, edited, and animated, a beautifully colored blend of (3-D graphics and 2-D) moving pictures all on his own.
Makoto Shinkai and his fiancée Mika Shinohara were even the original voice actors! After working on video games for awhile, Shinkai thought it was about time he endeavored to try something new, and a project entirely on his own as well.

After its release, Shinkai Makoto went from being virtually unknown to gathering a following in the anime community.

Director Makoto Shinkai made a short film called She and Her Cat in 1999 which won him some awards and a reputation.
Makoto developed the concept, wrote the screenplay, directed, animated, and voiced the lead male character.
Not only does it look visually striking, the story is an appealing (if somewhat cute) exploration of a sci-fi favourite – that people traveling faster than light will age more slowly than their loved ones back on earth.

Animation Insider - Voices of a Distant Star
Makoto Shinkai has well rounded character designs that although may appear unusual to most anime fans, is actually an interesting take on how we normally perceive the sub-culture.
In any case, as the story evolves it becomes evident that what we the audience find as far as character depth is established within the first few minutes, is as deep that Shinkai had scripted the characters to be personalized throughout the rest of the short film.
And with Voices of a Distant Star lasting approximately 25 minutes, it is almost as if Makoto Shinkai knew there was not going to be enough time to fully develop their characters; so instead, he delved into their independent similarities and had decided to wrap the plot around the personalities.

Voices of a Distant Star is, independent of its creation, an extraordinarily beautiful film, telling in deft strokes a tale of two lovers torn apart by the tides of war and millions of miles of interstellar space.
The fact that the film was written, directed, and animated by Makoto Shinkai, using only a Macintosh G4/400 computer, and assorted consumer and professional-level design and animation programs, only serves to make The Voices of A Distant Star an even greater achievement.
Extras include three versions of Shinkai’s award-winning animated short She and Her Cat; interview with Makoto Shinkai; The Director’s Cut of Voices, with alternate vocals; original production animatics; four original Japanese trailers; reversible cover; and ADV previews.

BBC - h2g2 - 'Voices of a Distant Star' and Shorter Anime Films By Shinkai Makoto, 1997 - May 2004
The film is drawn entirely in fl-and-white and the style of the art leans towards the semi-realistic with the interesting exception of the representation of the cats, which are essentially rough outlines with simple facial expressions.
In spite of the subtitle, the perspective is of the male cat Chobi, whose voiceover (provided by Mr Shinkai) makes up virtually all of the vocal element of the soundtrack; his owner remains a rather mysterious figure whose face is never fully visible, although her voice is heard briefly on a few occasions.
Mr Shinkai used to work primarily as a producer of animated sequences for video games, and his new career path has not led to a complete break with the industry.

As Makoto Shinkai is keen to point out during the interview included on this disc, the aspect of production that he strived to perfect most was not the lush visuals, but instead the story upon which the success or failure of this animation rests.
As such, Makoto Shinkai has been able to include several battle sequences between fantastic space creatures and the familiar mech that Mikako so ably pilots (whilst wearing a school uniform for some bizarre reason).
The first and most notable of these is three different versions of another Makoto Shinkai short named She and Her Cat, a monochrome animation about a cat and his relationship with his owner.

Japanese Movie Review | Voices ofa  Distant Star (2003) Makoto Shinkai
You don't think of animation as a one-man operation, but writer/director Makoto Shinkai created his short film almost exclusively on a Mac G4 computer using mostly off-the-shelf software.
However, those elements, while a welcome change in today's cinema, isn't a guarantee of good entertainment, but in the case of "Star", Shinkai has pulled it off, effectively marrying entertainment with nobility.
It's a credit to Makoto Shinkai that he was able to deliver such a careful balance of touching drama and slick action despite his limited resources and a huge gaping plot hole that hangs over the whole affair (it's doubtful cell phones, even in the future, could ever send/receive messages across such great distances).

Shinkai's metaphysical musings are murky at best, and he complicates his sweetly innocent tale with a terrorist plot and the outbreak of war, making Hiroki's reminiscence more densely eventful than it really needs to be.

Writer/director/producer Makoto Shinkai turned a lot of heads with his previous work, the twenty-five minute short "Voices of a Distant Star", in part because it almost a one-man show.
This is a very character-driven movie, and Shinkai never loses sight of that, so there's not much room for digressions to describe the story's divergent history or imaginary technology, so everything must be worked into the dialogue naturally, and in relatively small doses.
