The community of Makrinitsa in the central area of Pelion, is a preserved traditional village, with altitude from 850 m, and population 651 people.
Makrinitsa consists of the village with its various neighborhoods, the surrounding area (20.000acres) and the forest (40.000 acres).
Makrinitsa and generally Pelion, followed Greece΄s destiny and remained under Turkish rule until 1881, where the area of Thessalia was given to Greece.

Proofs of the older economic and spiritual flourish are the mansions of the families of Mouslis, Topalis, Xiradakis, Sisilianos, Basardanis, Gourgiotis, Maragis and Skoteiniotis, stone tower-houses with three floors and loopholes, wooden and sculptured roofs, heavy doors and a lot of decorative elements.

Pilion, in Makrinitsa village and the food our hosts -Kostas and Elena- prepared for us was delicious.
I don’t know the reason to that, except maybe that people don’t like to experiment, and that they are content with a good old steak.
Another thing that bothers me in Greek villages is the lack of homemade, lovely, savoury pies (not in Makrinitsa though, because we had a very nice leek pie in Theofilos café).
