Topic: Maksutov telescope

Telescope - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Radio telescopes are often operated in pairs, or larger groups to synthesize large "virtual" apertures that are similar in size to the separation between the telescopes: see aperture synthesis.
This means that a telescope with a certain mirror diameter can resolve up to a certain limit at a certain wavelength, so if you want more resolution at that very wavelength, you have to build a wider mirror or perform aperture synthesis using an array of nearby telescopes.
The telescope was aimed by the aid of a Foucault sidérostat, which is a movable plane mirror with a 2 m diameter, mounted in a large cast-iron frame.

Dmitri Maksutov   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-10)
Dmitri Dmitriyevich Maksutov was born on April 11, 1896, in the Russian city of Nikolayev, and three years later the family moved 70 miles to the port city of Odessa.
Maksutov was discharged from the hospital soon after the 1917 revolution and almost immediately attempted to emigrate to the United States via China.
Maksutov's notebooks reveal that in 1936, when he was contemplating Mangin mirrors (lenses with one silvered surface, primarily used in spotlights and lighthouse beacons), he had penciled in the margin a little sketch showing the reflective and refractive elements of a Mangin mirror separated to form a meniscus lens and a mirror.

 Kinds of Telescopes
This form of telescope used the symmetry of a spherical mirror, and a curved, spherical field of focus at which a curved photographic plate was placed, to allow a telescope with a very wide field to be constructed.
The objective lens on a refracting telescope, or the aperture of a telescope in general, is acting on behalf of the pupil of your eye when you are looking through the telescope.
A telescope with an aperture of 6 inches and a focal length of 48 inches is an f/8 telescope, one whose aperture is 1/8th of its focal length.

 Maksutov telescope
A type of catadioptric telescope (an instrument combining mirrors and lenses), developed by the Russian optical specialist Dmitri Maksutov (1896-1964).
It uses a spheroidal primary mirror, a deeply-curved spheroidal meniscus corrector plate, and a small spheroidal secondary mirror fixed to, or simply silvered on to, the back of the corrector plate, to give a triple-folded optical path.
The result is a very compact telescope of long focal length that gives a wide field of view and images of excellent quality.

 Intes Maksutov
The first telescope from this company was a 6" f/10 unit that could be purchased as an optical tube only, or as a complete telescope.
Their was no model designation for the telescope initially, but with the announcement of the availability of other sizes in 1993 it was given the name MK63.
Therefore this telescope was somewhat limited as a spotting scope, but did well as an astronomical telescope.

The Cassegrainian reflector is a type of reflecting telescope with a parabolic primary mirror and a hyperboloidal secondary mirror.
The Schmidt telescope had a spherical primary mirror at the back of the telescope, and a glass corrector plate in the front of the telescope to remove spherical aberration.
This telescope (or "Schmidt camera," as it is often called) is used for photography by placing photographic film (or a CCD camera) at the prime focus.

In the fall of 2003 several improvements were made to the scope; new coatings to increase the throughput, several minor fixes to allow for better collimation and the addition of a JMI motofocus assembly to eliminate problems with mirror shift.
Maksutov type telescopes and cameras have long been attractive to amateurs due to the possibility of constructing a well corrected optical system incorporating entirely (or nearly) spherical surfaces.
Maksutovs employ a weakly diverging but strongly curved and thick lens at some point in the optical path, typically ahead of the primary mirror to produce an amount of spherical aberration that is equal but opposite in sign to that of the remaining optical system.

 Howstuffworks "How Telescopes Work"
Compound or catadioptric telescopes are hybrid telescopes that have a mix of refractor and reflector elements in their design.
The Schmidt telescope had a primary mirror at the back of the telescope, and a glass corrector plate in the front of the telescope to remove spherical aberration.
The telescope was used primarily for photography, because it had no secondary mirror or eyepieces -- instead, photographic film was placed at the prime focus of the primary mirror.

 Company Seven | Orion StarMax™ 127 Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope
This telescope is a particularly good choice for those in suburban settings who want to glimpse changing features on the brighter astronomical objects, or for nature watching, etc. The telescope can be easily dismounted for use as a spotting telescope or as a 1,540mm ultra telephoto lens.
The StarMax™ 127 telescope optical tube assembly may be quickly detached from the Equatorial Mount for use as a portable telephoto lens (some sort of support is suggested), or for use as a portable spotting telescope.
Telescopes such as this often put the eyepiece at position that is only about 3 or 4 feet (0.9 or 1.2 meters) from the ground.

Meade's 7" Maksutov telescope, for instance, has a focal ratio of f/15, but the tube is only slightly longer than the 8" f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain.
In fact, most telescopes aren't fast enough on their own, requiring their owners to add "focal reducers" in order to get the extremely wide field of view necessary to do optimum work with a CCD camera.
There are also telescopes available with dual-axis drive, which means that there are two motors working in tandem so that movement in all four directions (north/south/east/west) is compensated for.

 Company Seven | Orion Argonaut™ 6" Maksutov-Newtonian Telescope
History of the Mak-Newt: The component that defines the Maksutov telescope is the relatively thick deeply curved "Meniscas" corrector lens which reduces spherical aberration, a spherical Primary Mirror of about f2, and a convex Secondary Mirror (usually an aluminized spot on the Corrector Lens) which imparts magnifications of about 5X.
The effective focal length of the telescope, and the overall physical length of the Mak-Newt telescope are about that of the focal length of the Primary Mirror.
Telescopes such as this often put the eyepiece at position that is eay for most people to reach while sitting or standing.

 Catadioptric Telescope - OPT Telescopes
A Catadioptric telescope is the generic term for a closed-tube system where a combination of mirrors and lenses are employed to form an image.
The Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope is among the most popular of the telescope designs today, simply because of these attributes and the fact that an amazingly wide variety of accessories is available for this most-favorite of telescopes.
Meade's Maksutov telescope, for instance, is a 7" f15 model, but the tube is only slightly longer than the 8" f10 Schmidt-Cassegrain.

 Pro-Optic 90mm f.5.6 Maksutov telescope/camera lens
I used to have the Pro-Optic (sold by Adorama) 90mm f/5.6 Maksutov, which as far as I can tell is the same 'scope as the Orion MAK-500 90 mm, in a different color (white), for less money than Orion wants.
As an astronomical telescope, it can give you nice wide-field views of all the usual fairly bright nebulae -- views that the folks with the long focal length 'scopes have trouble getting, like Jupiter and M22 in the same field, or M8 and M20 in the same field, or extended objects like M31.
The two 90mm Maksutovs showed similar amounts of nebulosity, but the view through the C90 was decidedly prettier because the star images were cleaner.

Evolution of the Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope by John F. Gills, Ph.D.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-10)
The main differences between Cassegrain's design and that of Gregory was that Cassegrain used a convex secondary mirror and moved it inside the focal point of the main mirror.
In the Schmidt Camera, a curved photographic plate holder was positioned at the focal plane of the main mirror for maximum sharpness.
Eleven years later, two men, A. Bouwers of Amsterdam, Holland, in February of 1941 and Dmitry Maksutov of Moscow, Russia, in October of 1941 independently conceived the idea of replacing Schmidt's complexly shaped corrector plate with a curved lens, called the Meniscus Corrector Shell.
