Though all sumo rikishi are considered professionals, only the rikishi from the top two divisions (Makuuchi and Juryo) receive a monthly salary.
During the tournament, Makuuchi rikishi may also receive sponsor money (called a kensho) from winning their individual bouts.
Finally, Makuuchi rikishi are paid for winning the tournament (¥5,000,000) or winning one of three special prizes (¥2,000,000).

 The Structure of Sumo
Rikishi in the top two divisions--Makuuchi and Juryo--are called "sekitori." Sekitori are easily distinguished by their colorful mawashi (belts) and the topknot of their hair, which is fanned out into the shape of a ginkgo leaf.
Makuuchi, the top division in the sport, consists of different levels.
The remaining rikishi in the Makuuchi division are all called Maegashira and are all ranked from 1 to 15 or 16 depending on their performance at the previous tournament.

 PTYWgame
Makuuchi players' scores will be compared to each other to determine win/loss records but only half will receive kachi koshi, regardless of scoring in other divisions.
Makuuchi & Juryo players who miss one tournament will be granted automatic kosho status and keep their rank for one basho (but please email me anyway to let me know you won't be able to make an entry).
If there is a tie, the first tiebreaker is the number of wins their picks made, the second tiebreaker is the number of kachi koshi rikishi on their selection, the final tiebreaker is for earliest entry received.

Makuuchi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Makuuchi (幕内), or Makunouchi (幕の内), is the top division in professional Sumo wrestling in Japan.
The name Makuuchi literally means "inside the curtain", a reference to the early period of professional sumo, when the top ranked rikishi were able to sit in a curtained off area prior to appearing for their bouts.
Promotion and relegation within the Makuuchi ranks and in and out of the division exists, based on kachikoshi (majority of wins) and makekoshi (majority of losses).

Sumo FAQ - Professional rankings: The Banzuke
Juryo is the most commonly used name for this level, but sumo insiders call them Jumai-me. I think this is from Maegashira Jumai-me, the tenth rank of Maegashira.
On the banzuke, Juryo rikishi are listed in the second layer from the top (the top layer is only for Makuuchi rikishi) as "Maegashira", same as other Maegashira rikishi in Makuuchi.
Promotion to Juryo status raises the figure to forty yen, in case the rikishi has not accumulated that amount, and it is at this level that the man begins to get extra pay based on the figure.

The first foreign rikishi to reach the Makuuchi division was a Hawaiian, a colossus sporting a 205 kg on 1.92 m frame: Jesse Kuhaulua, better known under the shikona Takamiyama.
Yamato is the last of the Hawaiians promoted to Makuuchi, and the one that had the least success, with only seven tournaments in the highest division.
These years of scarcity witnessed the slow progress of future Makuuchi foreigners: Kyokushuzan arrived in Makuuchi in September of 1996, Kyokutenho in January of 1998.

In the makuuchi division in the last few days wrestlers with exceptional records will often have matches against much more highly ranked opponents, including sanyaku wrestlers, especially if they are still in the running for the top division championship.
Similarly more highly ranked wrestlers with very poor records may find themselves fighting wreslters much further down the division.
Wrestlers who are from the same training stable do not compete against each other, nor do wrestlers who are brothers, even if they join different stables.
