Matheran ('jungle topped') is the nearest hill station to Mumbai and a refreshing break from the heat and noise of the capital.
The formal Hanging Gardens (or Pherozeshah Mehta Gardens) on top of the hill are an interesting spot to study the courting rituals of coy Indian couples nestled among the bestial topiary, and there are superb views of the city from neighbouring Kamala Nehru Park.
This large protected area of forested hills on Mumbai's northern outskirts is best known for the 109 Kanheri Caves which line the side of a rocky ravine in the centre of the park.

 Apathy in Malabar Hill about registering servants, cops harried
MUMBAI, June 13: Less than 100 residents of Malabar Hill and the adjoining areas of Cumballa Hill, Gamdevi, Napean Sea Road, Peddar Road and Tardeo --which have a combined population of over three lakh -- have registered their servants with the nearest police station, despite repeated requests from the authorities to do so.
In the wake of the murder of an 86-year-old woman at Malabar Hill on Friday, deputy commissioner of police (zone-II) Dr K Venkastesham said police have constantly warned residents on the dangers of employing servants without registering them at the nearest police station and ascertaining their antecedents, but the warnings have fallen on deaf ears.
The stickers with all the dosand donts were to be pasted on the doors of residences.However, while police felt the residents were not co-operative, some locals said the authorities were not doing enough to ensure the safety of citizens.

A massive stone causeway across the Flats of the island of Bombay (low lying areas between Dongri and Malabar Hill, separated by Island of Worli), is the only proof of work that was probably done to join the islands before the arrival of the Portuguese.
At the fortified Dongri hill, an esplanade and parade ground was cleared, from the walls of the Fort to the present day Crawford market.
The hills of Chinchpokli and Byculla were quarried and dumped into the sea, to fill the land near the railway line, the swamps and also the port to prevent the accumulation of stagnant water.

The Bombay police on Friday arrested Asha Gawli, wife of the dreaded gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli in connection with the sensational Manish Shah murder case.
According to police sources, Asha Gawli was picked up by the Malabar Hill police station on Friday afternoon from the gangland bastion, Dagdi Chawl at Byculla in south-central Bombay.
Currently she is in the Malabar Hill police station lockup, and would be produced before the metropolitan court on Saturday for remand.
