Malachi's ministry is, however, considerably subsequent to the time of Haggai and Zechariah, who prophesied in the late sixth century B.C., and, indeed, can scarcely precede the first governorship of Nehemiah (444-433 B.C.) in view of the various considerations stated in The Prophetic Books of the Babylonian Exile and the Persian Empire [ibid.].
Malachi, indeed, is clearly building here upon the foundation which the Prophet Isaiah had previously laid in the memorable prediction of the Messiah's special precursor with which he begins the third main unit of his book (40: 3-8).
Here in Malachi, in contextual terms, the main obstacles which would have to be cleared away from before the Lord to make His coming a blessing to people are the self-satisfaction which prevents them from feeling the need of salvation and the impenitence which keeps them from acknowledging this need.

YOU SHALL GO FORTH LEAPING LIKE CALVES - (Malachi) - John Piper
Malachi is prophesying the coming of a forerunner and a messenger of the covenant whom John the Baptist and Jesus claim to fulfill.
But in Malachi's day, just like today, the people of God took their eyes off the coming of God, settled down into the world and soaked up the mind and heart of their age, including its attitude toward marital unfaithfulness and divorce.
In the context of Malachi I think that means: Husbands and wives, cultivate with all your heart the covenant relationship between you and Jesus, and the covenant of your marriage will endure.

MALACHI, NRSV HEBREW BIBLE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The final book of the Minor Prophets is Malachi, whose placement following Haggai and Zechariah is probably based on a chronological principle, since the frequent allusions to Temple activity in the book presume the success of those prophets (e.g., Hag 1.7; Zech 6.15) in the restoration of the Temple.
Malachi probably spoke to a disheartened audience which questioned both the love (1.2) and justice (2.17) of God.
Malachi reversed the discussion: God, he avers, has been faithful to the covenant (1.2; 2.5-7; and esp. 3.6, "For I the Lord do not change"); it is Judah that has been faithless (1.6; 2.8, 14; 3.8).
