The malachite kingfisher, Alcedo cristata, is named for the bright blue/green feathers that sit on top of its head that may be raised to form a type of crest if the kingfisher is disturbed.
The malachite kingfisher is largely a piscivorous (fish-eating) bird and hunts its prey by diving into the water from a low bough typically over a slow-moving river.

The similar Grey-hooded Kingfisher is resident in East Africa, with small numbers migrating south of the Zambezi each year between November and April; this insectivorous kingfisher excavates a tunnel nest chamber in a sand bank, and is often found near dry watercourses.

 Kingfishers
The Kingfishers are a fairly large family of distinctive birds scattered around the globe.
This group of kingfishers, perhaps the most primitive of the lot, includes the forest dwelling kookaburras of Australasia, the woodland kingfishers of Africa and Australia, and a wide selection of elusive kingfishers from southeast Asia, the Philippines, and Indonesia.
Although we often think of these type of kingfishers when we think of the family, there are only 9 species of Cerylinae kingfishers and thus they comprise only 10% of the family.

The Dwarf Kingfisher is sometimes placed in the monospecific genus Myioceyx, and sometimes with the Pygmy Kingfishers in Ispidina.
However, molecular analysis (Moyle, 2006) suggests that the Madagascar Pygmy Kingfisher is most closely related to the Malachite Kingfisher, and that the present arrangement into Alcedo and Ceyx needs to be reviewed as it seems not to reflect the actual relationships (for example, the Azure Kingfisher is closer to Ceyx erithacus).

Malachite Kingfishers feed most frequently on fish that occur around floating vegetation, mainly Kribia sp.
Pied Kingfishers prey upon 14 different fish species, some of them being caught in the pelagic region of the lake, particularly clupeids taken by hovering.
By comparison with Malachite Kingfishers, Pied Kingfishers feed on a wider diversity of prey, and take larger fish, so that the dietary overlap between the species is relatively low (O = 0.181).

Such grouping answers at a glance the question, "Just how many species of kingfisher have I seen?" Also, it highlights the fact that kingfishers and motmots are closely related, which isn't immediately obvious in the field.
When a new kingfisher is seen, for example, the Life-List file can be loaded with a word processor, the SEARCH option can be used to go immediately to "kingfisher," and then it's a nice ceremony to type the new sighting in with all the others.
More serious birders might find fault with it because, for one thing, it doesn't mention races or subspecies, which in the future could be lumped into or split from other species.
