Pink-eared Duck - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Pink-eared Duck or Zebra Duck, (Malacorhynchus membranaceus) is a species of duck found in Australia.
It is the only living member of the genus Malacorhynchus; a closely related, but slightly larger extinct form from New Zealand was described as Scarlett's Duck (Malacorhynchus scarletti).
This peculiar duck may be most closely related to the shelducks but its relationships are enigmatic.

A PHYLOGENETIC ANALYSIS OF RECENT ANSERIFORM GENERA USING MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERS
My analysis supports the monophyly of the shelducks, although only by a single, possibly convergent character; further study may show the shelducks to be a grade of relatively prim- itive ducks.
I found Malacorhynchus to be a highly derived shel- duck; this genus has been assigned most fre- quently to the dabbling ducks (e.g.
A number of "aberrant" southern genera were sorted tentatively among these tribes: Anser- anas and Plectropterus to the Cairinini; Cereopsis, Tachyeres, and Lophonetta to the Tadornini; Stic- tonetta, Malacorhynchus, and Hymenolaimus to the Anatini; and Thalassornis to the Oxyurini.

Darren Naish: Tetrapod Zoology: The Madagascar pochard returns
Malacorhynchus has indeed been regarded as a tadornine on occasion; however, the evidence that (together with Salvadori's duck Salvadorina waiguensis) it belongs to a clade at the base of Anatinae is better supported, and indeed is the more traditional view.
For the record, in his later studies he concluded that Malacorhynchus is an anatine after all.
While Malacorhynchus and Salvadorina share many plumage characters which indicate that they are close relatives, the character support tying them to anatines rather than tadornines is not tremendously strong.

A PHYLOGENETIC ANALYSIS AND CLASSIFICATION OF RECENT DABBLING DUCKS (TRIBE ANATINI) BASED ON COMPARATIVE MORPHOLOGY
Hymenolaimus was studied in detail (Kear 1972), and Stictonetta was later removed from the Anat- inae on the basis of morphological and behav- ioral comparisons (see Johnsgard 1960a, 1961a, 1962).
These taxonomic revisions were adopted in large part by Johnsgard (1979) in the latest edi- tion of the "Checklist of Birds of the World," although tribes within the Anatinae were omit- ted.
Although it is absent in most "allies" placed in other tribes (Sarkidiornis, Mer- ganetta, Malacorhynchus, Hymenolaimus, and Marmaronetta), it is suggested in several others (Plectropterus, Salvadorina, and Heteronetta).
