The island of Malakula in northern Vanuatu is renowned for its complex megalithic cultures and ritual 'art' forms associated with initiation, grading and status rituals, certain types of 'hidden' societies and elaborate funerary rites.
Malakula is Vanuatu's second largest island - it is 2069 square kilometres in area with a population of 23,700 people that speak 35 different languages and an as yet unknown number of sub-dialects.
At the end of 1976, he travelled to Malakula on behalf of the Museum (which now has one of the world's largest collections of early objects from the island) to make an official collection of art and material culture from the fully traditional and non-missionised Mbotgot and Ayiaulian-speaking peoples of the island's southern mountainous area.

The island of Malakula, the second largest island in the Republic of Vanuatu in the southwestern Pacific, currently holds over two dozen separate Oceanic languages spoken by a population of under 30,000 in total.
In spite of this linguistic diversity, however, the original number of languages is thought to have been much higher, possibly one third of them having become lost or moribund due to contact with European labor recruiters, traders, and missionaries in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Crowley will survey the central and northern areas of Malakula in order to locate the remaining speakers of these three moribund languages, and to record as much linguistic data as possible from these speakers.
