Cunene Province: Water facilities throughout Namacunde Municipality, on the border with Namibia, are inadequate for the resident and returning populations and require upgrading.
Huambo Province: Preliminary results of a recent vulnerability assessment mission (VAM) indicate that approximately 325,000 people in the province are in a high state of food insecurity and as many as 110,000 of them remain inaccessible due to suspected mine infestation, collapsed bridges and poor road conditions.
Kuando Kubango Province: All three gathering areas in the province are empty after the last people in Matungo GA were moved on 23 May. Five hundred people remained in the Menongue transit centre, down from a population of 5,000 at the end of April.

The most striking characteristics of the Giant Sable, a subspecies of the common sable antelope, are its long recurving horns which rise almost vertically above its head before curving backwards and the absence of the full white eye-to-nose line which occurs on the face of the better-known sable antelope.
This Reserve lies in the Malanje province and is approximately 8 280 km2 in size.
The communities should be roped in to assist with the conservation of the Giant Sable, informed of its importance, and share in the potential tourism revenue obtained from its conservation.

LUANDA -- Fighting between Unita forces and government troops was said yesterday to have intensified in Angola's northern Malanje province, a day after the government was accused of launching a major offensive there.
Sources in Malanje said the clashes centred on Kumbi-di-Baze where the authorities, who claim control of the town, have recently sent special units to evaluate the military situation.
According to Unita, the three Portuguese nationals among 145 people killed in Malanje last weekend belonged to "a group of Portuguese mercenaries participating in the biggest offensive by the Angolan armed forces since the signing of the Lusaka peace accords".

 IOL: Angolan villagers head north to flee fighting
Malanje - Fighting has forced hundreds of villagers to flee to the relative safety of Malanje in northern Angola, where aid agencies can already barely cope with the needs of more than 250 000 displaced people, local officials said on Monday.
Malanje, one of the towns worst hit by 25 years of almost continuous civil war, was also surrounded by Unita rebels from 1992 to 1994.
The road linking Malanje to the capital Luanda 500km to the west is impassable, but is unlikely to be repaired anytime soon, the deputy governor said.

The locations with severe malnutrition rates between one and three per cent were Kuito (Bié Province), Caconda and Chipindo (Huíla Province), Mavinga and Kuito Kuanavale (Kuando Kubango Province), Saurimo, Muconda, Dala and Cacolo (Lunda Sul Province), and Lombe (Malanje Province).
Although admissions levels in therapeutic feeding centres are at the lowest levels since before September 1999, the situation in several provinces, particularly Huambo and Huíla, should be closely monitored and screening coverage should be improved.

LUANDA, Oct 2 (AFP) - Travellers using the road linking the Angolan capital Luanda with the province of Malanje in the east of the country face attacks by gangs of armed youths, according to local press reports Thursday.
The most dangerous stretch of the 400 kilometre (240 mile) road is reported to be the 30 kilometre (18 mile) section between the small town of Cacusso and Malanje, capital of the province bearing the same name.
In June dozens of people were killed or injured in armed attacks in the area between Luanda and Malanje, a rural province which was among those hardest hit by the 27 year civil war which ended in 2002.

In November, a government assault in Malanje aimed at controlling towns near the DRC border drove many civilians to Malanje's provincial capital.
Unprecedented numbers of internally displaced persons were registered in twelve of the eighteen provinces throughout the year, with an average of 30,000 new arrivals each month.
In September, there were some 60,000 newly displaced with 24,000 in the provinces of Cuando Cubango, Moxico, Luanda Sul and Norte, and 10,000 in Bie province alone.

 RSF - Letters of protest - Angola - February 27 2001
In a letter addressed to Paulo Tjipilica, Minister of Justice, Reporters sans frontières (RSF - Reporters Without Borders) called for an investigation to be opened into the attack on Isaias Soares, correspondant of Voice of America and Radio Ecclesia in the Malanje province (east of Luanda).
On 22 February 2001, according to the information obtained by RSF, Isaias Soares was at home in Malanje when two men burst into his house and opened fire at him.
The journalist had recently broadcast reports about crime in the province and neighbours warned him that members of criminal gangs were looking for him.
