Sun.Star Cebu - Malapascua Island folk won’t be evicted
JITTERY at first over their fate, some 200 residents of Malapascua Island broke into applause after government authorities assured them that the zoning contained in the proposed development plan does not mean they will be forced out of their homes.
The residents feared that with the establishment of the zones, they will be asked to move their houses within the multi-purpose zone located right in the middle of the island.
The provincial technical working group that drafted the plan inspected the whole island and made sure that their output will “respect” the rights of the fisherfolk who have been living near the sea.

Tracing this profound philosophy, perhaps this is why the largely fisher folk residents of the idyllic island of Malapascua welcome visitors like a bountiful harvest from the sea.
Unofficially hailed by quick word of mouth as Cebu’s Boracay, Malapascua is a lot of things Boracay is not: being shark inhabited (NOT infested, with non-man-eating thresher and white tip sharks), virginal, and a diving destination with at least three sunken ships turned into makeshift coral reefs.
But on the southern part of the island packed with establishments, the party has just begun— in a nightly fiesta fashion, visitors could take their pick from a block of alcohol-friendly, disco-heavy restobars to strictly dining havens.
