By 1 January 1935, the Experimental Company became The Malay Regiment with a complement of 150 men.
The 1st Malay Regiment was famous for its defence of Opium Hill or Bukit Chandu.

During the 19th century, Malay life in Sri Lanka was dominated by the military that became their family occupation until the Regiment was disbanded in 1873.
Particularly famous are the tombs of Saint Tuan Bagus Balangkaya buried at the Colombo grand mosque and Pengiran Adipati at the Kehelwatte Peer Saibo mosque in Colombo.
Malay troops are said to have taken part in the wars of the Dutch against the Portuguese such as the storming of Galle (1640), the siege of Colombo (1656) and the capture of Jaffna (1658).

History has it authenticated otherwise, as would be evinced in references mentioned relative to the issue, as supportive of the fact that Malay soldiers brought their women-folk, when they came to Ceylon.
Memoirs of Rycklof van Goens discloses that between 1810 and 1820, the local Malay community received a further boost in numbers by the arrival of fairly large numbers of men and women from the islands of Madura and Java.
In 1813 more than 400 Madurese men and women and children embarked from Surabaya to join the Ceylon Malay Regiment, followed in 1818 by a shipment of about 228 Javanese Soldiers and their families, mostly recruited from North-Coast cities of Semarang and Gresik in Java-SLMA 7/118- Brownrigg to John Kendall, 8th August, 1818.

The Malay Regiment, recently renamed the 1st Battalion, The Malay Regiment, in view of the formation of a second battalion, returned to Normanton Camp, a mile west of Alexandra, and took over responsibility for the beach posts between the mouth of the Sungei Jurong and Labrador.
Nevertheless Brigadier Williams felt uneasy about his right flank, as the 1st Malay Regiment, who were manning the beach defences between the mouth of the River Pandan and the western entrance to Keppel Harbour, had only one rather isolated company guarding the boom defences of the River Jurong.
The Company of the 1st Malays holding hill 125 was heavily shelled by artillery and mortars for two hours on the morning of the 13th February and incurred heavy casualties.

 Allied Ships & Regiments
The Queen's Lancashire Regiment has long prided itself on its close association with the Royal Navy which dates back to the formation of Saunderson's Marines in 1702 and was in particular cemented by the service of the 30th Foot under Nelson's command in Corsica, 1794.
All ranks of Allied Regiments are invited to call at Regimental Headquarters when visiting the United Kingdom and are also invited to visit the 1st and Lancashire and Cumbria Volunteers Battalions wherever these may be at the time.
This alliance with The Loyal Regiment (North Lancashire) was formally approved in 1954 but the connection between 2nd Malay Regiment and the 2nd Loyals was forged in the heat of battle in 1942 when they fought gallantly and side by side in the defence of Singapore.

Another battalion, the 2nd Battalion of the Malay Regiment was later formed in December 1941, six days before the Japanese forces landed at Singora, Pattani and Kota Baharu.
When Gen. Percival surrendered on 15th February 1942, six hundred or so personnel of the Malay Regiment were made prisoners of war and send to Farrer Park whilst the remainder managed to escape.

Drum Major O’Deane, a Malay non-commissioned officer of the 1st Ceylon Regiment, who deserted to the Kandyans in 1803, was absorbed into the service of the Kandyan Monarch and provided with a Sinhalese girl as his wife.
However O’Deane’s sentence was commuted by Governor Robert Brownrigg to “transportation to the Penal settlement of New South Wales in Australia” because of the fact that the Governor was impressed with the subsequent ‘uniform good conduct’ of the Malay Regiment.
The Macassan and Malay fishermen in their armed Prahu’s docked into Raffles Bay from time to time for stocks of water, and it was a familiar sight to see O’Deane accompanied by the Fort Commandant boarding these vessels to talk to the fishermen.

He was exposed to Malay literature, history, religion, and western classics in English, and in a cultured social atmosphere developed a keen aesthetic sensitivity.
Al-Attas felt the need to study, and voluntarily resigned from the King’s Commission to serve in the Royal Malay Regiment, in order to pursue studies at the University of Malaya in Singapore 1957-59.
He strongly advocated the use of Malay as the language of instruction at the university level and proposed an integrated method of studying Malay language, literature and culture so that the role and influence of Islam and its relationship with other languages and cultures would be studied with clarity.

The first Malay Rulers to command that an appropriate piece of music should be composed for their approval and for use on royal occasions were the Sultan of Johor and the Sultan of Selangor.
This tune was subsequently orchestrated by the Bandmaster of the Malay Regiment, Mr Lenthall and was officially adopted, as the Perlis State Anthem in 1935.
Every Malay state had now adopted an anthem of her own, but no occasion occurred for them all to be played by one band until after World War Two.

On 24 June, 1803, the Kandyan King’s Malay mercenaries referred to as the ‘Padikkara Peruwa’ led by Sangunglo, their agile captain, commenced the attack on the British garrison.

The opinion of the Colonel Commandant of the Royal Australian Regiment, Lieutenant General Sir Thomas Daly, and the Regimental Colonel, Colonel A.V. Preece was that the cuts might well be temporary, and that instead of disbanding battalions, they should link, with a view to separating in due course.
Her Majesty The Queen approved the alliance between The Royal Australian Regiment and The Royal Malay Regiment on 9th May 1966.

In December 1941, British and Commonwealth forces committed to the defense of the Malay Peninsula and Singapore comprised four army divisions supported by small numbers of aircraft and naval vessels that had been sent from other war zones to provide token support to the ground forces.

I guess they are not important to part of history...Not important enough to be placed inside the history books..To be taught to our children...But the funny thing is that their story might inspire a little courage in all of us......
