Having been introduced to Malayan railways in 1930 on a batch of 4-6-4 tank locomotives and applied in 1932 to the final batch of Class 55 locomotives, RC valve gear utilised poppet valves instead of slide or piston valves to control the admission and exhaust of steam to-and-from the engine cylinders.
Two others are rusting quietly away, serving sadly as railway station decorations, poignant reminders of the glory days of steam, and hardly noticed by passengers passing through on the modern, air-conditioned express trains.
The venerable railway station building and land have been sold to Singaporean developers and international passenger trains now arrive at and depart from a new facility in Woodlands in the northern part of the island.

Though Masjid Jamek is possibly the oldest surviving mosque in the centre of KL, the National Mosque constructed in 1965 (Picture below by courtesy of http://www.tropicalisland.de) is now "the" mosque of KL.
Next to the National Mosque is the Malayan Railway Administrative building and opposite it across the road is the Kuala Lumpur railway station.

For those not familiar with the region Singapore is an island state, roughly the size and shape of the Isle of Wight, situated at the southern tip of the Malay peninsular.
The metre-gauge Malayan Railway (Keretapi Tanah Melayu) enters Singapore via the Johore Causeway at Woodlands, where the immigration and customs facilities are now located, and runs across the centre of the island, via Bukit Timah, to a terminus at Tanjong Pagar, adjacent to the container terminal on the south-western edge of the city.
At Bukit Timah there is a passing loop, and it was also a junction for a freight only branch to Jurong, which closed in the mid 1990s.

Hat-Yai's history as a junction, drawn on Malayan maps, makes it relevant here; but I think Khun Niphat's total history is not relevant to a thread on Malayan Railway Maps.
After selling them the land for the Railway Quarter', Khun Niphat convinced the powers-that-be to call it Hat-Yai Junction, as this was less of a mouthful for foreign passengers and would-be entrepreneurs.

Taking the train is a comfortable way to travel within the country and if affords one the opportunity to see a lot of the countryside.
Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhand (KTM Bhd), (Malayan Railway) also operates regular services to Alor Setar, Padang Besar, Haadyai and Bangkok from Butterworth.
Penang's public transport system is efficient and moving around by taxis, buses or trishaws may be a fun and inexpensive way of catching the sights.

You could buy your train tickets there but you had to cross the channel by ferry to board your train in Butterworth on the mainland.
In the late 60s it was taken over by the Penang Customs Office.
