Malayattoor once had no access to the other parts of the state by road and the principal gateway was the waterfront.
At the foot step of the hill, is the statue of St. Thomas erected in 1938, perched on a rock to protect it from the menacing trunks of the elephants.
The seeds of faith sown by St. Thomas was reaping hundredfold yield and surge in population in and around Malayattoor necessitated the erection of a few other churches in the vicinity of the great pilgrim center.

The baby elephant fell into nearly 10 metres deep well, which was later, discovered by its strident cries.
The baby is said to be have been in the herd that had entered the village from the nearby Malayattoor forest range.
Earlier, villagers were not able to reach as the herd, specially the mother elephant was creating havoc at the vicinity, however, later, when the herd went away the villagers approached the baby elephant and informed the forest officials.
