New nationalisms throughout Southeast Asia supported structural policies of enforced assimilation, systematic discrimination, ethnization, and even political persecution, of the Chinese minorities of the Nanyang--in short, institutionalized policies of "competitive race relations" which have lead to a crises of identity of the overseas Chinese communities (Strauch 1980:11).
This stereotypical economic preoccupation of the Nanyang Chinese can be best understood in terms of their regional interpositionality as an entrepreneurial class of merchant-middlemen mediating the relations within the "dual economies" of the local native context and the larger regional/global market economy.
The economic orientation of the overseas Chinese, which the non-Chinese often interpret as a negative stereotype, is the cultural expression of the positive primacy of the goal and achievement of socioeconomic success and status in life.

As a result of the NEP, combined with the economic growth led by ISI, there was a dramatic increase in national pride and the participation of Malays in the economy.
