Malaysian Independence Day on August 31 has officially been used by the government to instill gratitude and for reflection.
And so, for many Malaysians, who celebrated the 48th Merdeka (freedom or independence) Day this past week, the event has long been void of real meaning.
At the very least Malaysians appear to be getting more exasperated with their country's shortcomings, at the same time becoming more pointed and articulate in their criticism of them.

According to Martin Conboy, chief executive of ACA Research which carried out the study, what Malaysian financial companies tended to look for in a business process outsourcing (BPO) vendor was ability to get the job done, even if it was only as cheap as doing it inhouse.
In it, 39% of Malaysian financial services companies said their main priority in a vendor was the ability to meet contract expectations, 26% expected to see one with financial strength and only 22% were concerned about a good reputation.
This showed more sophisticated thinking about BPO by Malaysian companies, which Conboy attributed in part to the awareness of IT brought about by such initiatives as the Multimedia Super Corridor and the Government?s encouragement of IT in general.
