Almost all government employees and Europeans living in those areas spoke that rather simple, pidginlike "bahasa Malayu Pasar", but they were also familiar with some of the local varieties as well.
Born and brought up in East Java I spoke Dutch at home, but I also had to make myself understood in "bahasa Malayu Pasar", "bahasa Madura" (spoken on the nearby Island of Madura), and had to familiarise myself with at least two languages spoken by the Javanese population in Central and Eastern Java.

Elsewhere in the hinterland, including what became known as Malayu in the Hari River basin, their authority would have been exercised by alliances with local chiefs or by force and always with decreasing effect the further these areas were from Palembang.
Malay unity under the leadership of the maharajas was inevitably undermined when, as early as the 10th century, Chinese private ships began to sail to centres of production in the archipelago, with the result that the Chinese market no longer depended on a single Indonesian entrepôt.
Hegemony had passed, for unknown reasons, to the neighbouring estuary town of Jambi, which was probably controlled by the great Minangkabau country of Malayu in the interior.

The script of the manuscript has not been sufficiently researched, but it is certainly derived from later Kawi, and possibly one of the local Malayu scripts of Sumatra.
The last two pages are written in an old form of the Kerinci script (surat incung) containing a few letters that are nowadays unknown in the Kerinci script, but still existent in other southern Sumatran scripts.
